Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Above Cabinet Strip Lighting Installation Location

We are installing covered LED strip lighting above our kitchen cabinets. With our pitched roof, the distance to the ceiling ranges from 4 - 10 feet. One of us wants the lighting to extend straight across the cabinets regardless of depth, a couple of inches back from the shallow cabinet doors so they won't be visible and so the lighting will reflect consistently. The other wants the lighting to follow the cabinet depth. Please help us resolve this dilemma!

IMO leave irt without the strip light since it will never look the same across the wall since there is a difference in wall height that will affect the light It would be good to post a pic of the whole space too

If there is no wall extending behind the cabinets, I don't see the purpose of installing the lighting. I don't see much purpose in illuminating the ceiling.

I did end up getting a new transformer - online dealer sent to me at no charge. Handyman replaced for $25 - now working great!! He did not take the fixture down to do it. The old transformer was attached with some kind of adhesive - he just disconnected it and left it in to avoid potential damage to the fixture by trying to pry it off. And I now know I have an extra fixture that I thought wasn't any good that will work with a $20 transformer - and I can install myself - now that I've seen what's involved.

Where to locate switch for above-sink lighting

Our sink switch is right next to our disposal switch, just left of the sink. It has been that way for 18 months and has not been a problem. In the old kitchen it was very similar and was never a problem in the 4+ years I had it. The biggest factor for me, I think, was putting a dimmable switch on the main kitchen lighting. If it is late at night and I need to do some dishes, I turn on the main lights, dimmed to a very low setting, walk to the sink and turn on the sink light. When I'm done I turn off the sink light and them turn off the dimmable main lighting as I leave. Dimmable switches cost less than 30 dollars and are well worth the investment. I have switched out regular switches for dimmable ones in almost every room in my house. I found in my old house that they also came in handy when guests were staying who weren't familiar with our house. We could leave the living room light on at a low level (more like a night light) and they could easily find their way around without trouble. If I were ever to buy or remodel a house again, every room would have a dimmable switch.

You could look at setups with both cool and warm light before making the decision. Some prefer having both the UCL and room lighting at the same color temp which in most homes is 2700k. On the other hand, linear fluorescent UCL is usually >= 3500k. I went with cool white (~ 3500k) for the UCL since the backsplash color went better with cool white than warm (2700k) and the UCL is used more often than the room lighting. The color reproduction will depend quite a bit on the Color Rendition Index (CRI) of the light used. With hue changing light strips, it is technically possible to have a color temp range from < 2500k to 5000k. Maybe something to think about as a future upgrade?

Thanks for your inputs. For clarification:
- There IS a wall behind/above the cabinets on one side. See top photo. The wall is the same height above the cabinets. The pitch is in the other direction. We haven't decided whether to hang anything on that wall or otherwise have two or three large decorative pieces on top of the cabinets.
- Behind the other bank of cabinets, above and around the refrigerator, is the stairway leading up to the garage entry door. Maybe we don't need lights there...
Beverly, your third photo is similar to my cabinet layout in that the cabinet above the wall oven (?) is deeper than the other cabinets. Does the strip extend straight across the entire bank of cabinets, or is it closer to the front edge. That's my real question (debate w husband)

I just don't find it necessary to draw your attention to the space above the cabinets.
