Can I grow another tree from an existing lime tree?
Comments (9)Hello Citrusenthusiast, If you are willing to start small, take a handful or more 4 to 5 inch cuttings, and follow the rules for rooting them with rooting powder or liquid. I took three cuttings from my Key lime this past fall, dipped the cut ends in the rooting hormone powder, popped them into separate little two inch pots, kept them under plastic bags in indirect light in my house, and got one to take. I lost the other two because I totally forgot to check to see if they needed watering. Regarding the fear of spreading disease, I think that unless every last suburban landscape crew, professional and amateur, in southern California is practicing "safe" pruning techniques you really are unlikely to be guilty of a major crime. I lived for a decade in Florida, including a couple years in Sarasota in the early 90s, where citrus canker disease was a major concern, and I used to watch the supposedly professional landscape crews working through the citrus trees that grew on the apartment complex's property, and I never ever saw them sterilize their pruning tools--which were reportedly a potential way the disease could spread, even though Sarasota had several major citrus groves within a few miles of the location. Up here in Connecticut, I try to remember to always wipe my pruning shears with rubbing alcohol after trimming each tree I have, even though, obviously, I don't exactly have to worry about infecting nearby citrus plantations. I hope you have good results, and that you get a few other people interested in your Grandma's tree. Don...See MoreMy lime tree is depressing me. Need help! (the tree...not me)
Comments (7)In ground, apparently you can dig a hole to uncover the roots to cause the plant to dry out and cause stress to make it flower, but its much easier in pots were you just dont water them Its that cold over here that ive not had a problem with the citrus flowering so ive not tried, but i do have a couple of bears lime trees that have flowered and fruited like a lemon tree , continuously flowered since last june under the growlights, i though they must have been lemontrees miss-labled but they are limes On other fruit trees such as pear, plum and apples it seems normal that if a few years after planting they havent flowered they chop the roots with a spade to stress the plant into flowering!, that sounds a bit drastic to me chopping the roots to cause a plant to flower...See MoreLime Tree Grafted at an Angle + Bonus Christmas Tree Photos
Comments (4)Putting the trunk on an angle wouldn't change the crotch angle. The weight of the canopy is less than the stress wind would cause. Get a cfl and put it on the stem where you want growth. Force it to bud out. Make the tree do what you want it to. Start now and get the buds to break before spring so by next fall you will have a mostly balanced tree. Also don't let any more growth happen on the current canopy. Rub off all new branches as they grow. Only let the tree grow from the bare stem....See Morelime tree not looking so good
Comments (6)Thanks guys!! I don't have that Virtue of Patience. So i guess I just have to wait for new growth and make sure I fertilize it more often though the growing season....See MoreAlex Morales
