Is there anything specific you don't like about the counters? If you feel like an update then fine, but I wouldn't update just because you think other people think they're dated - I think they're a great match for your cabinets, and you can update in other ways like hardware, lighting, etc.

But, if you're itching to change the counter, I would look at a soft white/light cream color. I think if you want black/very dark is going to look heavier than what you have already and that look itself is kind of dated, you'd really be no better off than you already are. So something light.

Having just changed my granite countertops, my vote is to change all your kitchen counters to the same material. i would coordinate color & pattern to your flooring as anything that complements your floor will certainly go with cabinets.. I would also update backsplash with tile that goes up to bottom of upper cabinets.

Just switched from a copper colored granite to fantasy brown marble (and painted cherry cabinetsinlets).

I love your kitchen. Simple, well coordinated, rich finishes. If you really need a change, though, I get it. I’d look at Taj Mahal quartzite. Get rid of the 4” splash and install a simple tile.

Please don’t follow the herd and paint those cabinets. And, please don’t change your granite for the trendy, plastic fake wanna-be marble.

From what little I can see of your ceilings, it looks like you could use some recessed lighting, and updated fixtures. Proper lighting will make all the difference in how dark the room feels. Do you have undercab lights?

I had that same granite in the foyer of my first house! It was bullet proof, specially in winter when hosting playgroup and everyone would take off their snowy boots and jackets. Never had to worry about the water puddles. In your kitchen I would probably change it out for something lighter and brighter.

I find all granite beautiful. It’s natural stone, how can it not be beautiful? But unfortunately some patterns are more dated than others. If this was my kitchen, I would only replace the granite if I could find a new use for the old granite. Your kitchen has large rectangular pieces of granite that would look great maybe as surface in an outdoor kitchen? Or an outdoor patio table? Or perhaps another use? The other chopped up granite in your kitchen may not be able to be reused or saved. When you look at how new countertops, paint & new backsplash changed clt3’s kitchen, the transformation is pretty dramatic. Light creamy countertops would look great with your dark cabinets as well as a current backsplash tile.
