Our bathroom light fixture has fallen out and so we are taking this time to replace it. Any suggestions on lighting and mirror fixtures that would brighten up this bathroom or otherwise improve it? We just moved in a few months ago and so don’t want to do a full overhaul, but would love suggestions on brightening this and making it more user friendly. We are thinking of painting the cabinets to match the walls as well. Also you can ignore the shower curtain! Thank you!

so here are my thoughts:

1. do not paint those cabinets they are very nice, I would add drawer pulls and knobs

2. add a roll-out cart with baskets or storage for that unused vanity area, that will let you keep some of the "kid" stuff snd toiletries concealed.

3. light fixtures just don't fall out they should be strapped to the actual junction box back there which makes me go hmmm. most electrical boxes like that are round so im wondering how DIY that was done.

4 add a cabinet behind the toilet as well.

I would add built-in shelves in the unused vanity area. Then you can add some great baskets to store all the kiddy stuff. You have 3 different browns, the cabinet, the floor and the shower tile. Because of this, I would paint the cabinet white. Change the shower curtain to a white one. Definitely add cabinet hardware and replace the mirror with something more current, a round mirror would look great. Whatever finish you choose for the cabinet hardware, use that same finish in the new vanity light. I too would be concerned about why the vanity light fell out, sounds suspiciously like a very bad DIY job. If you are not handy, find someone who is to have a look at it. The junction box is supposed to be attached to a stud. If it isn’t, there are alternate solutions but you’ll need someone who knows what they are doing. And one more thing, I would remove the tile around the toilet paper holder, looks weird. It won’t take much to get this bathroom looking good. And it can be done on a budget.

In the picture, black is the current layout. Green is the change if only shower was made bigger and one door would be eliminated. Red is a complet demo, removing the wall section between two toilets. All the water lines from upstairs are in the section of the wall that is between two toilets so removing this wall would require a major move of water lines to the side and there would have to be a section of wall kept behind new toilet and vanity. The door from master would have to be framed and move to the left as a pocket or barn door. The drowing is disproportionate. It is all very cramped in there Current shower is only 26"x26". But may be replacing vanity for a wall hung vanity in the larger bathroom would change the feel. It will all have to be torn down and replaced including removing subfloors as they are rotten. So either remodel will be a lot of work. What should we do?

I wouldn't use beadboard because it's cottage/beachy and your bathroom is traditional. If you want the beadboard look, I'd use a Shaker vanity. Otherwise I'd use traditional paneling with that vanity. Here are a few examples: With a warm color palette, you could use polished nickel for a little sparkle. It has a gold undertone where chrome has a blue undertone. The vanity is heavy and ornate so I'd probably look for a wood framed mirror for balance, though I'd keep it simple. I like rectangular mirrors when you are using an overhead light fixture. I'd use a traditional three-light fixture that's a few inches shorter than the mirror. What will the countertop be?

I am replacing the current vanity with one with 3 drawers. Still deciding on a small cabinet over the toilet that matches the vanity, 18" wide with 2 closed shelves, one open one. There's only 50" from wall to wall. 25" for the vanity is the biggest I can do. I guess I could do 28, but that would need to be special ordered. I think it would be too tight. The other 25" is for the toilet and room for a waste basket. I have a pocket door into the bathroom to give me more room to walk around in the bathroom. Best thing I ever did about 15 years ago. Most of the lighting fixtures I like are 3000K which I think will be fine, warmer I know. But I don't do my makeup in the bathroom. I've been reading more about LED lights and bathrooms probably too much now. I think I have almost settled on this one over the 20" wide mirror, light fixture is 18" https://www.lampsplus.com/products/eurofase-wynn-18-inch-wide-chrome-led-bath-light__37m39.html I am using a really great contractor for renovation, but I am doing all the design work myself. I think two is plenty for a small bathroom, but what I would do is put a recessed (rated for damp use) over the tub/shower and a flush or semi-flush (depending on the ceiling height) in the center of the space outside the tub for general lighting. If that was to line up with the vanity so much the better. You should post a drawing of the room showing where the fixtures are if you want more specific advice.

Thank you both! We had an electrician come to look at the light which prompted this replacement. He said the same thing. Looks like a bad DIY job. Think I will go with the round mirror and match up the hardware with the mirror and lights. Also love the storage ideas!

I agree with all what Brown Dog said. I would also paint the floor vent the same color as the wall.
