I plan on starting an herb/veg garden in my new home, any ideas?
Comments (2)If you know any contractors, you could ask them. How much soil are you looking for? If you want it by the truckload, there's usually "aggregate" places where you can order a truckload of top soil. Glover in Hilo may sell topsoil by the truckload, they have cinders at least. We build raised bed gardens from cinder blocks. About three layers high, then we put down a layer of weed mat to keep any tree roots from coming in from below. Then pile in whatever soil we can get. I'll usually let all the weeds sprout up and then yank them out before they seed. But you can skip this part if you don't mind weeding for the first year or so of your garden. Then the top 10" of soil, especially the top 4" are the best soil I can get. There's usually amendments of oyster shell worked into at least the top ten inches as well as compost and rabbit manure since we have that. Rabbit manure is an excellent fertilizer, you can put it directly on your plants without the need for composting as you'd have to do for chicken manure. For the cinder blocks, we set them so we can reach into the middle of the garden. How long doesn't really matter, but being able to reach the center from the sides is pretty important, IMHO....See MoreNeed design ideas for the exterior of my new home
Comments (12)Widen the walkway to the main entry. If there is the time and energy or cash, move the wall back about a foot or two since it currently makes the walk feel narrower. Regardless, redo the main walkway so it is 4’ wide. Make the steps the same width and and move the pillar by the opening onto the porch to accommodate the needed opening width. The porch, pillars, and bright colored forward facing door make the main entry visible as such. If you do a patio for the apartment, fence it along with the lower entry with a gate so it is clearly not the main entry. Whoever lives in the apartment can tell guests how to get there. If there is space, can you add a low fence with a remove able front opening to hide the ?gas meter? No suggestions on landscaping other than blocks of ground cover with a few feature plants to keep the “modern” look you want. Wait a year to see what is already there and whether you like it. I would not remove the large tree, regardless as it provides shade and therefore lower AC bills as well as giving nice character to the property. Comments (17)"Is it too naive to focus on floorplan for a not-so-idle exterior? What is a good rule of favoring elevation-vs-floorplan?" Perhaps not naive, but its not architectural. Good architecture is harmonious on the interior AND the exterior. To achieve that dual harmony both interior and exterior must be studied and resolved simultaneously, not individually. A "good rule" is to work to achieve harmony in both interiors and exteriors, not one over the other. Why is the house raised such that it takes 4 risers to enter and leave the house? That seems to create small and strange stairs at every exterior door. Why not simply lower the house and eliminate all the stairs? Do you have anyone in your family for whom stairs are difficult or impossible?...See MoreNew home--Exterior paint/scheme ideas please!
Comments (12)Will definitely be doing interior work and paint as well. As of now, definitely planning on neutral and earthy colors with the potential of adding some of those muted/powdered jewel tone colors as accents throughout, etc. There is a dark wood vinyl throughout entire home & a river rock fireplace (more neutral colors) with dark granite shelf that I will be working with. Thank you for the advice regarding the brick, that makes sense. Also appreciate the suggestion on getting interior planned out first--was thinking if that should be a factor in my exterior planning!...See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
