Above kitchen cabinet decor

Recently added picture above cabinets. Trying to figure out what to put it n either side of the picture? Or less is more?

I'd take a trip to a fabric store and hunt up some large graphic fabrics to stretch over some stretcher bars. That would add in some badly needed color and let you scale the size appropriately to the space. Your accessories are too small and even though there aren't many, appear cluttered because they are the wrong scale. You need LARGE scale object. Work on your craft skills and do a giant paper mache vase to go with the fabric panels. Maybe a large sculpture. Nothing under 24" in height needs to go up there. And you don't need a lot of items to make a big impact when you use large scale objects.

Redfeather, I lived most of my life in TX and I agree that silk greenery on top of the cabinets (and lots of it) seems to be a TX thing. We moved to the Carolinas 2 years ago and my kitchen felt so stark I put up several items on top of the cabinets to soften the look and make the kitchen feel more homey. Some of my neighbors have left the tops of their cabinets bare, but their kitchens have backsplashes with some visual interest. Personally, I like the look of the plants and I think it's a matter of personal preference and decorating style. I think your pottery would look nice grouped with greenery or baskets or some wrought iron pieces. I am posting a couple of my kitchen photos (hopefully no one will tease me too much :) ) Please disregard the tupperware and Halloween buckets! I also wanted to add that my original intent was not to put so much stuff on top of the cabinets and just do a few groupings instead. Personally, I feel like grouping smay work better in kitchens with taller spaces above the cabinets - but that's just my 2 cents : )

Don't paint a vine with flowers on them. That will suck value from any resale you want to do. DH just had to pay to get his ex wife's taste in murals removed so the house would sell. Do you have a photo of your soffits? We have something similar. We put crown molding up there and it looks very elegant.

I have a string of rope lights up there on a timer--looks warm and cozy in the evening. Also the largest of my collection of pitchers--I'll attach a photo. Yes, they get dusty but I don't actually use them, so every five years or so they get taken down and washed. I can't imagine scrubbing the top of the cabinets. I'm sure some of you think it looks "cluttered", but I like it and I'm not changing my cabinets. The picture was actually taken to illustrate the ceiling fan, but you get the idea on top of the cabinets. As you can see, I am not a minimalist!

Nothing. And that picture is lost up there. Instead hang the picture on a wall at eye level where it can be seen, appreciated, and enjoyed. I’d remove the Bonsai from the counter too - it doesn’t belong there, and also doesn’t it get in the way when you are preparing a meal?

I always thought decorating above cabinets put kitchens back into the early 90s But this article from this very cool blog talks about using that space in different ways. Maybe things are changing....

I've read the same thing about putting too many things above the cabinet but I thought it call for something up there. . .I've also read more recently a some collections are ok if they are cohesive. Maybe a few more pics of different sizes and similar landscape might be what pulls it together. I like my little olive tree bonsai 😕

@User - I like your olive tree bonsai too. I just didn't think it belongs on the kitchen counter. Not only because it will be in the way, but because a Bonsai should have a place of honor on a table in a living room or someplace it can be appreciated - not amidst the cutting board and toaster oven.
