I haven’t had canisters on my counters since the 70s. Haven’t seen anyone else have them out either. Everyone keeps their supplies in their pantry or cabinets.

All canisters are stored away in the upper cabs (lower shelf) of my baking center, where they’re convenient, won’t collect dust, or take up space on the counter.

I haven’t had on counter since 2005. But my mom at 73 still keeps on counter I think if you have decorative and like them display. If you are a cook then kitchen is about work and what fits your needs. Most people don’t scratch cook anymore. The cooking is heat up frozen box. Heck my mom made homemade biscuits breakfast my whole life the flour left out like salt pepper cause it was used. Just another perspective. Your space should make u happy

Put away behind closed doors. And, they are kind of cute. Celadon colored vintage Martha Stewart ;0) The larger containers or Costco packaging are in the pantry. Daily use sizes (believe they hold about 6-7 pounds each of sugar or flour) are conveniently in a kitchen cupboard with door.

Kept in the pantry, but I don't even use containers! I keep flour and sugar packages inside ziplock bags.

Oh, wow -- looks like I am in the minority, dare I say a relic LOL! I don't use them that much, DH uses the flour more than I do to make coatings, and I rarely bake anymore so only use the sugar a couple times a year in any quantity, just pinches here and there for tomato sauce or an odd recipe that requires a bit. No reason I can't keep them in the cupboard. These are really nice, heavy Staubs, kind of a shame to keep them hidden away but the color mis-match is driving me batty.

Ours are stowed in the "pantry." (Okay, it's the stairwell to the basement, but it's off the kitchen and has shelves that hold food, that makes it a pantry, right?) We have limited counter space in our kitchen (like 6'), so there are a few canisters with tea in them, and of course, the sugar bowl is out, but the bags of flours and sugar are in the pantry (we put the whole bag into a plastic container). We definitely run a scratch kitchen for the most part; yes, we'll use a brownie mix and such, and we use store bought broth, but dinner is usually made from scratch, and subject to improvisation along the way.

Honestly, if I were to put the flour on the counter, I'm not sure which flour would be most practical - we've used three different flours in the past month (all-purpose, bread, and "00"). There is sometimes a little Rubbermaid container of all-purpose floating around (often in the fridge to be out of the way) that gets used for roux or dusting a surface. Small amounts of sugar get pilfered from the sugar bowl.

I have a lot of baking supplies in a lot of canisters and those have a dedicated pantry shelf. I hate clutter on countertops. I have a knife set and a coffee pot out. That's it.

I use these and they are stored away in cabinets near the prep area. Easy to grab and bug/moisture proof. I used a magic marker to label (flour, sugar, etc). From Walmart. 😁

Just about everything I use every day is out in plain view on the counters. I don’t care if my cannisters match, or how they look next to the bowl of garlic heads. My breakfast cereal is also in plain view. So are the raisins. I think it all looks great, and more imporantly, we eat delicous meals.

In the cabinet for me. First reason is because I like the clutter-free appearance and utility of counters without canisters. Second reason is because my old ”decorative pretty” canisters were not air tight. All you need is to have one run-in with meal bugs in your life to make you rush out and get airtight canisters. Those airtight canisters tend to be bigger, and unattractive, and not suitable for the counter.

There's a small vintage butter jar of salt, and a coffee can I painted the same color as the walls, with actual coffee in it. Everything else is in the pantry. We don't have enough counterspace to keep canisters out.

Oh, except there is an under-cabinet shelf by the microwave with some colorful art canisters. They've always held cocoa, Ovaltine, and instant coffee. But it occurs to me that we don't use them any more, probably time to repurpose them. The problem is, no one will remember what's in them, or even to look at the little labels I would put on. Thinking of them as cocoa canisters is too ingrained!

I gave my matchy matchy canisters away years ago. I do keep flour on my counter but i got a big glass jar with a metal lid that seals. looks so much better. everything else stored in pantry

I put away as much as I can. My canisters are more functional than attractive.

Replace them with canisters that look better on the counter. But only if used several times a week. I haven’t ever had canisters and I’m a senior.

I don't remember ever having canisters in my house. Flour, bread flour, sugar, powdered sugar, brown sugar and oatmeal goes in rubbermaid tall containers and they are put in a cupboard. I like clutter free counters. I do have a set of John Deere tractor canisters at camp. 2 sit on the sideboard in the kitchen next to the coffee pot. One has coffee and the other holds the coffee filters. The 3rd is in the livingroom and holds candy.

I keep three glass canisters, coffee , sugar and flour on my counter. I also have a crock for utencils. I prefer high use items and staples at my ready and have a kitchen for function over form and like everything infront of me rather than hidden behind doors out of reach.

You said you placed them in a wooden tray? Why not place the tray on its side, leaning against the backsplash and then put the canisters against the wooden background? I inherited my mother’s old tin canisters. They are dented and scratched up with large pink flowers on them. I keep them in my pantry rather than on my counter. I use their contents a lot and won’t be parting with them. If you love your canisters, put them out and enjoy them!

The canisters I got 30 years ago as a wedding gift now sit inside a cabinet designed for our coffee station. They hold coffee, tea and sugar no flour and provide a sweet memory of the giver but they are hidden away most of the time.

I have a canister for coffee on the counter next to the coffee maker. It is airtight. Other than that, it’s a hard No to other canisters on the counter for ”flour, sugar, etc.” For that I use the various King Arthur Prokeeper airtight canisters. Airtight is ultra important to me. Those types of canisters don’t look good on a counter, and take up too much room. They are in one of my upper cabinets. And I have recently discovered Rubbermaid Brilliance Stainshield containers for smaller things, and have fallen in love (if you can fall in love with a container).

Do most people actually dump the flour and sugar out of the bags into the containers? Except brown sugar, ours go into their containers bag and all.

Yes, I dump flour and sugar from the bags, into air tight plastic canisters. Otherwise, the contents wouldn’t fit.

I currently have white canisters on my counter. I'm contemplating moving them/getting rid of them once I get my kitchen reno'ed as I'm probably going to have mostly white countertops. Right now I have a grey/black/white/blue granite and I like how they look, but I'm thinking I'd like less stuff on the counters, and some contrast in the future. Also, I don't always refill them, lol, and often get flour or whatever from the pantry.

I have the Prokeepers (and similar) too, and I do dump the contents straight from the bag into the container. They go in my baking cabinet. Rices go in tall glass containers in the pantry.

I use glass canisters for baking ingredients and staples like oatmeal, rice and grits-all in the pantry. The only food items out in the kitchen are things like bananas and tomatoes.

I have very little on my counters already, I can't stand clutter, but I've always had and liked a canister set - go figure. If I could get away with putting away DH's Keurig monstrosity I would -- I'm not a coffee drinker but he is, and since he pays the bills too I need to let him have his thing.

After reading the responses last night, I put the canisters in the cupboard and moved the stainless rice cooker to the corner where the canisters were. It looks a lot better -- the stainless lightens things up visually and it's always out on the counter anyway so the perfect solution for that large empty space.

mxk3, have you looked at Nespresso machines? They tend to be a bit smaller than Keurigs ... more so if DH enjoys espressos, lungos, americanos, as the traditional Naspressos are smaller than the Vertuos which do large format coffee. Might be less of a monstrosity?

Can the Nespressos use K-cups? (I'm clueless -- I'm not a coffee drinker)

No, they use a different capsule.

Sad to say i have a Nespresso AND a Keurig on my counter. Nespresso capsules cost approximately double the cost of Keurig capsules.

My canisters of baking stuff live in the pantry. But I have a trio of brown glass canisters of parsley, minced garlic, and diced onion that live on a lazy susan on the counter.
