Powderpuff, I just started buying plumeria plants in the last summer of 2011. I was looking trying to find the perfect soil to grow my plumeria I called the president of the Plumeria Society in Corpus Christi Tx, who was also the president of the Botantical Gardens in Corpus, and asked him what they use. They have the most beautiful display of Plumeira plants there you could ever imagine. He said they use Miracle Grow garden soil, commercial perlite, and alittle cow manure, to make their soil. Then I saw K's soil he makes. I went with K's mix, he had simple instructions, that were easy to follow, but I added a bag of compose cow manure to his mix. My plants grew like weeds. Then in the spring, I found the information on how to make gritty mix. I could never find the chicken grit, I used turface in its place. I have to say, all the cuttings I put in it in the spring rooted, I was impressed. I potted up my newly rooted cuttings in this gritty mix and put them in the yard in 5 gallon plastic pots next to the back fence, that get almost all day full sun. I was not worried because I have a sprinkler system that comes on every other day. I came back the next week and they were all shriveled up. They all died, just like everyone did on the green mile. I lost all those new plants. If you are able to water you plants every other day, and in the summer water every day, the gritty mix is great for growing plumeria and desert roses. In Texas we have weeks of temps over 100 degrees. Some of on this forum, get together and meet to discuss plumeria, they had similar experiences trying to grow plumeria in the gritty mix. I love the gritty mix for rooting, but not for growing my plants. I am sticking with what works for me in Texas. I have renamed K's soil and now refer to it as " Special K" soil . and Barbra

Hey Folks, just got home and finished my chicken dinner. It's 8:17PM Gee Wizz were did the day go? kms2, Yes, a Chapter would consit of PSA members in good standing with the rules of the PSA. Benefits from sales at events would go towards the Houston based PSA in support. This can also attract new supporters to the website and have local and national articles on Plumeria. If I read exactly, doesn't Naples Botanical Gardens have a kindered relation with the PSA? I noticed this one the PSA website? Maybe what I'm searching for is 100 miles south of me? I feel a more centralized location for Florida would be Orlando. I know here in Bradenton (right on the coast) south of Tampa, I have access to the Palma Sola Botanical Gardens complete with a plumeria garden. Plenty of area for out door sales and a real nice pavilion recreation hall. The possibilities are endless. I bet if I called Florida Colors, Brad's Buds & Blooms, The Mad Plumerian and a few others they'd be in on it. At least start out with a once a year sale and event. I met a Roger Galle and wife from the Gulf Coast Plumeria Society last weekend and I mostly just listened to what he had to say. I do know that the GCPS is inactive at this point. I don't see it coming back. All I can say is...Open minds say more than open mouths, so my mind was open and learned a lot. My thoughts go to all of the Florida Growers who are in it for a business and a way to help support their sales and add new customers if they choose. I'm sure there are many talented growers with tips and ideas enough to share at the events. I would have my work cut out for me, but why not? anthony_toronto Historically deer are not a problem where I live, since in the 15 years in this house I have seen all of four or five and usually at a distance. In the past if we have seen them, they pass us by for the alfalfa and corn fields. But we had several dry years, range and forest fires, so they came down out of the hills when they normally don't. My garden was green and moist when little else was. The one hit on the highway was crossing between a cornfield and an alfalfa field. I would not hit one on purpose, nor wish anyone else to hit one. I didn't actually cheer, that comment was intended to be tongue in cheek (after all, it was already dead) and I was pretty sure someone would point out the hardship or damage done to the car or people by hitting the deer, so I added the part about the prayer. I offer up prayers for every accident I see, deer related or not. I am over half a century old and have driven thousands of miles in deer country every year and have never hit a deer on the highway. I did hit one in the past, in the middle of town where you really don't expect to see one, but I saw it and I was nearly stopped by the time we made contact. The silly thing more or less walked into my car, looked at me through the windshield, then trotted to the side of the road and jumped a six foot fence. The deer was possibly not even bruised and it did no damage to my car. As the Fish and Game guy on TV says, "If you decide not to hit a deer, you won't." karenrei I have had solar powered electric fences for livestock, but if you make them tall enough to possibly stop deer, there is a good chance they will get caught up in it when they try to jump it or run through it. So we don't build them that high. I don't expect to have a deer problem this year. We have had plenty of moisture and things are greener than they have been in the past. Add to that the fact that a couple of the farms north and southwest of us have added irrigation pivots and I am unlikely to have a problem with them. Plus one or more of our new neighbors (city folk moving to the "country" I believe) allow a number of dogs to run loose at night. They keep me awake with their barking and they chase and kill some of my (mostly wild, "set free" in the country) adopted cats that I have fed for years, but they may also act as deer deterrents. Bets
