What culvert? I see nothing. It is well camouflaged now.

The only thing you should ever put over such a drainage culvert is a grate. The point of a drainage culvert is not just to move water, but to also collect it. During a heavy rain it is collecting water from your yard. Affordable grates are small and meant to cover drainage channels in driveways. Larger grates get expensive in a hurry.

I was so disappointed my hydrangeas did not bloom last year.We had such a mild winter. It was a shock to me as these plants were propagated from my grandmothers 40 year old plants and they had bloomed the year before at her house. I live about 15 minutes away from her and never thought I would have total winter die back. Our new home is on a hill and we get very strong unprotected winds in the spring for about 2 weeks. In mid march, the plants were leafing in and a few nights dropped to the low 30's and all the stems died in all the hydrangeas. They grew back from the base but since they bloom on new growth, I had no blooms last summer. This year, I have new leaves out on old growth already. I chose 2 Hydrangeas to try to protect. I had some moving blankets from our last move. I wrapped the stems loosely to make them more upright. I took 4 foot rebar and placed them in the ground around the hydrangeas for support above the plant. I took a 50 watt low voltage landscape light and placed it in the center of the plant. I took two blankets per plant and placed them over the plant. I secured the blankets with a few stones at the base. I added a remote thermometer inside one of the blankets to see if my experiment would work. I also placed a thermometer outside the plant. I remove the blankets on warm days and rainy days. So far it has worked. We had temps of 21 and underneath the blanket the temp was 33. My other hydrangeas have already died back to the ground. The reason I am doing this is for sentimental reasons. These hydrangeas remind me of growing up. It has been a pain to have to check the temps every night to make sure I cover them up in freezing temps. Even if it works, I do not think I will do it next year. I think I will pot them up and overwinter them in my greenhouse. Sorry for the long book version. I love hydrangeas and can not think of my southern garden without them so I may just have to pot up my propagated plants and replace my outdoor hydrangeas with ones that bloom on new wood. Then I would not have to worry about them dying back.

Dear Greg Since I am lazy,I prefer to make it as easy as possible,really. It has nothing to do with having over 60 palms/cactus to protect! LOL Here are 4 methods I have tried and like,all but the bigger "hoop" house are heated with X-mas lights...my favorite(: All of them together. O.k. really 5 ways,there may even be a few more in there somewhere. I covered my Sequoia with this umbrella greenhouse, I love these things but they take a lot of heat. This is what I used the first year for the first 2 Trachys I ever planted. I have no name for this but it is kinda my favorite... one layer of green plastic coated fencing with 2 layers 1" clear bubble wrap and a layer of opaque foam between the another layer of fencing to hold it in place. I use a trash can lid with a burlap coffee bag in-between for insulation,it can also be draped over the south side if the sun is heating them to much..15-20 7wt(x-mas) lights. Large "Rose cones" protected all my Tree ferns etc. 8/7wt bulbs all hooked into a thermocube/on at 35F/off 45F. Washys cover this way-same double b-wrap,thermocube etc, I will need to add 2' to these this year-and more x-mas lights. I opened the top on these when I could. Heres what I did the first winter(-: pretty wasteful but fun! Now that the palms/etc have grown so much I can't afford to light up the neighborhood!-LOL More insulation less lights these winters! Anyway,that is some of what I have done over the years (not all though)hopefully this will give some of us some better ideas on how to improve protection-like me! Temps in the garden have ranged between -18F and 106F over the past 4 years.

The trick to protecting plants from cold is not just to cover them, but cover them *including* something that holds a lot of heat. For example, cover them, and the ground under them. The ground holds a lot of heat, and will slowly release that heat during the time when the air is coldest, into the air trapped inside. If you have a tall potted plant, include the pot in the wrap. Same thing. Seal the edges. Don't invite the cold air to get in. If the edges of the tarp are on the ground, throw some 2x4s on the edges to hold them down. What is funny (and sad) is where I see people wrapping a *plant*. Just the plant. Like a tree in a pot with a tarp just around the tree. That's a sure way to kill the plant. What you've wrapped up has no source of stored heat, and the temperature inside will pretty quickly drop to the air temperature outside. A blanket around a person is warm because a person makes heat. A plant does not. Obviously, in doing this, insulation helps. For a really hard freeze, layer multiple tarps. I throw a sleeping bag over plastic tarps. For the worst freezes, and a few square yards of bed, put a 100W light bulb inside on the ground under the tarp, on an extension cord. I've kept some peppers alive this winter, and we've seen multiple hard freezes, with temps going down to the low 20s. Well, it looks like my three year old bananas bit the dust, but my TAMU Jalapenos will survive.

Best way to cover tile before painting??

We were told that the tile should be down before painting all the trim and walls so this is what we have done. Tile is almost complete. Now the big question is What is the easiest and best way to cover the tile before trim, walls painted and cabinets stained?? PLease help with any information you have. And what items need to be used in doing all this? All information will be greatly appreciated! This house building is about to wear me out :)

My vision is to cover the open mouth of it, so dirt from the bed behind, leaves from trees the does not clog it. Where does one buy grates?

You might be able to find a suitable grate from a store like Home Depot or Lowes. If, however, the culvert is very wide, you will need to look for a company that specializes in grates. Do a search for "commercial drainage grates" to see if you can find others.

i dont really understand the situation based on this pic from a drone... or the second story window ...

put in a good ground cover that will stop soil erosion ... and remove the trees and shrubs far enough back so leaves are not able to fall into the gully ...

also speak with your local extension office for a referral to the appropriate overlords .. lol ..

one might think there are rules and regulations when dealing with any kind of drainage ... im sure you dont want to invest a lot of money in some fix.. only to be told any obstruction is not allowed...

what is all the bare earth this side of such??? .. where is the lawn .. or ground cover ... bare earth is the reason its going in there ...

What geographical region are you in, roughly? A culvert like that is designed to carry a lot of water for a reason. It's also designed to be easy to clean. Find out from local authorities if you are allowed to cover it at all. A grate would let in lots of small leaves.

The easy things you can do now are: Cut down the shrubs near the culvert. Replace with ground cover. Keep the culvert empty by using a leaf blower or rake the area.

If there's a neighbor's fence on the other side, talk to your neighbors about increasing their upkeep of the shared drainage area.

Thanks for your suggestions and I am going to be planting a couple of ground covers to keep the soil in place. Which ground covers work well in Zone 9 B ? Is my next homework

Now I see it. I thought that was a curb between a driveway and a flower bed. It is a big cement ditch. A culvert is a round pipe. That is a cement ditch.

You can't cover that. It has to remain open for WATER and maintenance. You can hide it with some plantings from your view. As for any soul getting in it, someone has to keep it clean. If they get washed away, well that is evolution at work.
