Comments (3)Like so many other aspects of life, death has been scrubbed up, and moved out of sight as much as possible. I don't think a person needs to dwell on it, but it's not unhealthy to think of mortality once in a while and getting comfortable with the concept that sooner or later you will deal with the proximity of it, and then come face to face with it. It's surely a difficult concept for most humans to face. In my own lifetime parting with loved ones has gone from a wake in the privacy of the departed's own home amid friends and family to 'renting' the services of a business who will do all the work so nobody has to be too close. I found an old, old obituary in an historical newspaper describing a child who lay in state in what is now my own living room, where people eat popcorn and watch TV....See MoreQuote July,6 ,2008
Comments (10)I took it the same way Marda, I think that although the more wealthy colonists prided themselves in their finery and etiquette, they were pretty much held in the same regard as we are today by some in the OLD WORLD. IOW, no matter what we do, we shall not be the vanguard of proper culture and are socially clueless. I am saying this laughingly and tongue in cheek but it's just one of those things that always has been and shall likely always be. Some of this came about because our culture then really did tend to adopt from all emigrants the best their societies had to offer, so even though a lot of our colonies were founded by one country or another, we already were becoming a melting pot. Likewise, our young fields and orchards had not the time to attain any great significance and were considered a crude copy of those in the old world. Even our vegetable seeds and fruit trees were imported in sailing ships and not always good choices for their new home. I STILL see a distinct tendency to stage whisper asides about other countries in the EU, even though it's politically incorrect. My gosh, it's hard to change old habits of centuries' standing even though they may have been allies since WWI. They'll wink when they make those comments, but they're uttered anyway. I once offended one of my hosts in the Isles when I deferred from spending my holiday sightseeing, reminding him I practically grew up in Europe. I was reminded that however, it was in France, and therefore ............won't repeat what he said as it was meant to be offensive to me....See MoreJuly 2007 New Home Sales Just Posted...
Comments (4)"Inventories of unsold homes dropped to 7.5 months at the current sales pace." To me, that is probably the most important statistic in the whole piece, and that it, while still high, is improving, comes as a surprise. However, missing in this article is news about what is happening with foreclosure rates - I read somewhere that july 2007 foreclosures were almost double what they were in july 2006. That can't be good. I think inventories are likely to start rising again, unless new construction really comes to a standstill. Add to that a record number of ARM resets coming in october and it is still difficult to feel optimistic....See MoreCan a roofing company increase quote AFTER a contract has been signed?
Comments (4)I’m not sure about that. Several times we have had to have new roofs put on our homes. The insurance guy always came out to examine the damage and then the insurance company would issue us a check based on that examination. We chose whatever roofer we wanted - if his bill was less, we were money ahead. If his bill was more, we paid the difference....See MoreJeffrey R. Grenz, General Contractor
