Quick question re: bathroom mirror placement
Comments (24)Melle - it is from an Italian wallpaper company. The product is applied much like regular wall paper, then various coats of finish are painted over it to waterproof it. The vinyl paper can go over dry wall but my constructor was too nervous and installed waterproof kerdiboard (or something like that, sorry, forget the correct name). We should have ours completed and installed next week, the picture I posted was an inspiration pic. Comments (10)We plan to include electrical outlets inside those towers. Well, that was going to be my first suggestion. An outlet inside the towers is a great idea ... out of sight, yet still useful. A thought on the towers: Since they will be near water, you'd be smart to "bump them up" just a bit ... to prevent splashes from migrating over to the towers. Yeah, yeah, I know, you have space, and you're not going to be splash-y ... no one ever plans for this, yet water damage exists. Here are two bathroom countertop towers ... note that the one on the right is slightly "raised" and is better protected. I think 1" of countertop would've been enough, but the idea is solid. We do not want to have outlets at vanity level between the sinks since that would impact our mirror options Outlets can be placed IN a mirror, but I agree it's not ideal in terms of aesthetics. What about a pop-up outlet? You see them advertised for kitchens, but I don't see why they couldn't be placed in bathrooms -- this is just one example of styles available. Other thoughts: - I like that you've included windows for the toilet/shower, but the door is only 30" wide. A little larger would future-proof you in case of a disability /walker. This toilet /shower would still be a challenge though. - I'd like to see a shelf over the toilet /or a shallow freestanding item across from the toilet for holding toilet paper ... and perhaps medical needs as you age. Needing "various stuff" at the toilet is quite common among senior citizens. - Is the shower head on a 4" wall? I think you need a little deeper wall here. - Where do you see yourself hanging towels by the shower? I don't see an obvious answer. - Pocket doors are great for doors that are left open most of the time: pantries, laundry rooms. They're not so good for bathrooms, which are opened /closed multiple times a day. Pocket doors do break (not if, but when), and when they break, they're difficult and expensive to fix. They're also more difficult to open /close, especially for senior citizens....See MoreBathroom Vanity Mirror Size and Placement
Comments (8)There isn't a rule for light height since wall heights vary, but placement will control the quality of light output. I don't think you mention if these lights are doing all the work for the room or if there are can lights above, or if the vanities are in an alcove vs open in the room. You could lower lights to 80" but you mention you don't want all the extra empty wall space above. I've seen photos where folks take the mirror higher than the lights and lights are mounted through the mirror. Might be easier if you draw it out to see where you want light placement because mirror size will play into it. For example if vanity height is 36" including countertop, will there be a backsplash included to factor in? If there's a 4" backsplash, and you want light at 80" that still leaves you about 40" to work with for mirror placement. Or you could have mirror custom cut to sit at top of backsplash and go to height that works with light placement. The best lighting is closest to your face, so without sconces, you could look to buy a lighted make-up mirror to get the closer up view when you need it....See MoreBathroom vanity mirror placement
Comments (20)You had this, and you got used to it. I doubt the toilet placement even met code with the adjacent open shelving, the mirror abruptly ends.........why? I see a make up mirror in a corner, can only assume you used the potty as a perch, lid down? It is human nature to get used to something, even something NOT great as this was, and how may I ask, did two people use this set up, simultaneously?! You repeated the scenario of the single offset sink - which set you up for awkward, as you are finding out, mostly due to the wide width. Offset can work, but not at this size and single sink. It may be "convenient", but it isn't pretty. This can be both. I'd encourage you to inexpensively add a wall , lose the 21" drawer base, and give the vanity some symmetry. Also good lighting, attractive lighting with three recessed and two eye level sconces. I might normally give you three options. There aren't any that look good: ) other than this, especially given dollars and value added in looks. Bonus is you can add a pretty table for soaking supplies, minus that 21 inch drawer base. You STILL have 60 inches of counter top for junk, ( 30" each side of sink) as there is no way your sink was wider than 21 inches! Handy to your float boat, below.... and were I you? I'd add a tv to the tub side of that new wall: ) 19 inches, 59.00 bucks...See MoreRelated Professionals
