Can replacement windows be replaced?

My windows were replaced w replacement vinyl windows and I hate the thickness of the frame. Can they be replaced w other replacement windows? ( Thinner frame, more glass). One contractor told me they can be replaced, another said you can't, you'd have to pull out original aluminum and do new window install, my stucco is fairly new.

Yes, however that is a stucco frame jump window there. You are going to damage the stucco removing that unit in all likelihood.

Thought I would bump this back up and finish the story. Simonton finally sent a guy out to replace the window today, no charge. I called the dealer, who called Simonton. Simonton said they would handle it directly. Weeks passed, no word. I called the dealer again and he said he would call Simonton again. After he did that, their designated contractor called to arrange installation. He came out this morning, popped out the glass unit and replaced it with another. Mine was a Simonton 5500 series. The contractor said that the less expensive series do not include labor in their warranty. I asked how many of these fail. He said that within the 20 years he's been doing it, about 500-600 have needed to be replaced. I guess that's not too bad. So, the test will be the performance of this window. Hope I don't get unlucky twice. Despite having to nudge them twice, I am satisfied with their service.

The windows should have an ID sticker in the header portion or on the side of the sash. You can order the sashes, complete with IG and muntins. Those are usually 2/3 the cost of a window. Be sure to order them with Low E glass and agron gas for best energy efficiency. Call Simonton and ask for instructions on how to order them. Michael

You can do that in a pinch...we have done it on several jobs where what the customer wanted was not available in a replacement offering. The drawback to it is usually the frame is thicker so you loose more visible glass than you would with a true replacement, and a replacement is designed to fit into the frame of another window and be screwed in place, and the screw holes are pre drilled where that will not do any damage to the hardware of the window, drilling yourself you may hit a locking mechanism or other piece of hardware that would have to be replaced. You should be able to order the new construction window without nailing flanges as in many applications nailing flanges can not be used (ie concrete walls in some ICF houses)

I will suggest taking a picture or several close-up pictures of the window and ask a good local window shop what they think it is. A good shop will answer it for you to earn your future business. A bad shop will ignore you or try to sell you something without answering to your satisfaction. A fine way to figure out who is good and bad in case you need them. Or post your pictures here so the many professionals reading here can share their opinions before you go to a shop. May be the seal can be fixed, may be it is some hidden cracks or it may require a replacement. Until the pros can see it, no one can venture any educated opinion. GOod luck!

Thank you, yes, I got a new quote today and the recommendation is to put a trim around to cover any stucco damage... So I'll be replacing the glaring white vinyl window frame for a wood trim, hmm... not sure if it's going to have the visual effect I'd like.

Has anyone ever tried to adhere a wood trim on top of the thick vinyl frame? ( To hide it)

Could I possibly screw wood trim directly on the vinyl window? ( Quotes came in at 20k for 19 windows so I'm rethinking my options).

Screwing wood onto the vinyl wouldn't be wise. Could cause warranty concerns and introduce a pathway for moisture into the window frame... If your primary concern here is breaking up the white frame, painting may be viable. It looks like there are some grooves that would produce a natural termination point for that.... I don't really love that idea either, but it might be the most cost effective way to achieve what you are looking for.
