Excellence von Schubert is such a beautiful rose . I looked it up on help me find snd it is listed as a hybrid musk . I grew a few myself, and that was an attribute of them as well. They could climb , if you wanted , but they made their blooms on the ends . I found it to look like a lovely fountain shape and didn’t actually try to make it climb . I have seen Cornelia , a similar hybrid musk trained as a climber and it was beautiful.

So , it helps for you to know that your rose isn’t the traditional climbing rose you may have read about . It may take quite some time to get to a magnificent shape and size but will be well worth it ! Our friends here know a lot about these roses ( especially on the antique forum !) and we will love to hear all about your garden .

Oh , just in case you aren’t familiar.. help me find is an excellent resource for info on the roses . Basically you can find background info on the rose as well as comments and reviews as well as great photos too ! If you already know about it , sorry for the extra info !

My EVS bloomed at the end, it's in 4 hours of morning sun. More like a vase-shaped shrub in my zone 5. Canes are thick & stiff:

I'm glad you posted your photo, Straw. I have wondered how EVS does in our climate. In warmer climates it can get quite large. It's hard to know how to plan for space.

Carol, if you're in a warm climate, z7 and up, it could get huge. If you tell us where you garden, and zone if you know it, someone in your general area would be able to give you more specific information. Dianela, in z7, grows it, but I can't think of anyone else, off hand.

Welcome Carol! Not to add too much confusion as you are just starting out, but Excellence von Schubert is sometimes wrongly sold. Several nursery’s have been know to sell Gartendirektor Otto Linne as EvS. So look at pictures of GOL in Help Me Find roses to see which one you have. EvS is mauve and mostly thornless and GOL is pink and thorny. I had EvS for a while in a spot for a climber but it was just a 6 foot mound with blooms only on the ends. I gave it to my Sister-in-Law to put at the top of the slope above their patio so it would cascade down and they could look up at the blooms. I don’t think EvS is really a climber.

EvS has thick canes that would be very hard to train. If I kept it I would have started to cut it down to 18 inch stubs every Spring for it to stay nice. Cornelia, on the other hand, is a wonderful Hybrid Musk to train as a climber with few thorns and thin pliable canes.

Stephanie, what is the name of the rose in the last pic. It looks like the Von Schubert pics I have seen. I should post a pic of my rose, but just now I am not able. It has very small blooms that are pinker &some white in a huge cascade. I looked up Gartendirektor Otto Linne rose. Still the rose is much larger than mine.

Guess the question is Can we train any rose to be a climber - or maybe not. From the posts it appears some may turn into climbers or "No". Roses are hard.

Can Rambler roses be climbers. Will Ramblers get the offshoot on the main canes like climbers.

Just hard to find info even on youtube professionals.

I have also been trying to find Paul Barden roses. I think I have 2. Jeri Jenkins which is actually blooming now even though it came in a very small container.

Rogue Valley roses sent me this rose & also a Dakota Redwing which is diseased with white fungus. I have sprayed it, but yuk.

Excellence von Schubert is in all the pictures above. Jeri Jennings posts regularly on the Antique Rose forum and she has a lot of experience with antiques. The Hybrid Musk named after her is fabulous from the pictures I have seen posted. Kim Rupert (roseseek) and Paul Barden also post here. I have Dakota Redwing (new baby this Spring) and it has shot up to 4 feet with the most beautiful glossy green foliage and the roses smell heavenly. Only a few blooms since it seems to be focusing itself on leaves as it should in its first year :-) you should add your area and zone to your name. That will help people help you. Roses can behave soooo differently in different areas of the country.

Do you think Dakota Redwing can be trained to be a climber ? Anyway, thanks for letting me know about Burlington. Will check it out. Carol BTW I am in zone 9

Are you in California Carolstropicals, z9 or Florida? Here is my EvS. From RVR. More of a mound than a climber here.

My Dakota Redwing is a lovely upright rose so far.

If a rose genetically will only send up 4 foot canes in your climate then it can’t be a real climber. You might get it to be a taller shrub though. You had mentioned ramblers in an above. Those are the most serious climbers. They get 30-40 feet and more climbing into huge trees. There have been a few posts here where people show off their ramblers. There is a rose called Mel’s Heritage that is fabulous for SoCal and just goes absolutely crazy! Lisa who posts here has the best specimen I have seen. With its Wichurian heritage I think it would be classed as a rambler, although HMF doesn’t specify rambler. If you pay the modest fee for a subscription then you can use the advanced search features. Also some roses that are shrubs in a cold climate are short climbers in a warm climate.

All of this is so helpful. I am in zone 9 Houston, TX. It is so hot right now that we can't even go outside. I received 2 Billy Buttons from Annie's Annuals yesterday. Not even able to acclimate these plants to the outside shade. Now they are in my window.

I have to water mostly at nite.

Did step outside to take a pic of the unknown rose that was ID'd as Von Schubert. The sprays are very large, but the size flowers seem small compared.

I do have the Mel's Heritage. Guess I need to be prepared for a Huge rose. I'll have to move it somewhere in the late fall.

Really helpful information about 4 canes. I believe my unknown rose makes more canes, but blooms only on the ends.
