Please Help Me Decide on a Tree
Comments (5)Yet another manifestation of a common landscape design misperception, that large-growing trees will not fit in a small space, in this case, 45' by 60' or more. Please think about this: A low-growing, ornamental tree bears its main crown at the same level as human activity, thereby taking up MORE space where it matters. A big, tall oak, maple elm, whathaveyou, will be, at maturity, a trunk in this same vertical stratum, with its crown overhead, acting as the "ceiling" of your landscape, and like all ceilings, well out of the way of things you want to do. Don't be offended Jason. I assume you're not a landscape design pro. What does irritate me to no end is the modern tendency of people who ARE pro designers to omit large-scale shade trees from their designs, I'm convinced, because the big circle that represents their crown in plan view 'appears' to take up lots of space. Hence the proliferation of McMansions with the biggest plant material on site being your redbud, flowering crab, hawthorn, etc. Huge, tall houses with no tall-growing trees to match their scale. +oM...See MoreHelp me decide?

Comments (13)I posted this earlier on a thread about this same thing. This really helped us, so I hope it will help you, trudymom. Because we really wanted to add the floor outlets to our great room, we used the Jordan's room planner to decide where furniture would go. This room planner is really neat and fun to use. You can even measure your furniture, and change the dimensions on the templates so they will be correct. After we had the furniture placed, we used the little tape measure icon to measure the distance to where we would put the outlets. It gave us clear measurements from the walls so we could go back to the site and show the electrician exactly where we wanted the outlets. We also used this room planner when we bought our bedroom furniture last year (six months before we even started building)--it is really good for those of us who have trouble visualizing what we'll do in a room. Hope you can put in your outlets--that's one thing I am so looking forward to--getting rid of extension cords everywhere! Comments (7)Option #1 is the better one, but it needs tweaking. Downdrafts suck because they don't suck and there isn't nearly enough room between the sink and the cooktop in #2. It's just a overall bad design. Do you NEED seating in both locations? I would tend to think not. Where is your breakfast area? Your dining room. Pick one area for stools, and do it right. Check your aisle spacing. With seating, you need 48" aisles, or 60" if you have traffic behind that seating. I'd add a prep sink to the island across from the fridge and move the cleanup sink to the peninsula. Put a MW in a base cabinet on the island facing the fridge...See Moreontariomom
