Gas line questions

I'm having my kitchen remodeled and currently there is no gas line to the house. I called the utility company and they will come out and run a line to the house free of charge. The problem is they are saying it is anywhere from 7-21 weeks until the come out. My kitchen gut and remodel is going to happen in the next 4-6 weeks. Wife really wants a gas range so trying to figure out what to do.

My question is: Is it possible to have a plumber run a gas line pipe in the kitchen walls where the stove will be down to the basement and then somewhere in the next 7-21 weeks when they run the line to the house, have the plumber come back out and connect it all up? or is there another option I may not be thinking of in this situation?

I think so. Yu can get. a really inexpensive electric stove to use until the gas is hooked up

See if there is propane conversion kit for your appliance please. If so, you'll be cooking in a day.

It is not feasible to put the shut off valve in an adjacent cabinet. The gas line runs down the wall directly behind the end run of a DRAWER cabinet, then corners to come out behind the range. The exisiting line that comes out behind the range was installed by a licenced plumber and was inspected and passed by the city. It is up to code having the shut off valve behind the range, as sliding out the range to access the shut off valve is considered "accessible." Regardless, the shut off valve to the main gas supply to my house is directly outside the kitchen door, just a few steps away from the range, so shutting it off outside in an emergency is easy enough. Takkone, that recessessed box set up is what I was pushing for, but the idea was nixed by my DH who decided it was overkill for our situtation. There is a large recessed panel in the back of the range, and we have decided to raise the shut off valve a few inches to where it will slide into that area when the stove is pushed in. mike_home, If that was a temporary shipboard installation on a submarine I'd say it was a temporary pressure connection with a pressure gauge and a Schroeder valve to permit pressurizing with air. The tie wrap on the valve ensures that it is not opened during a pressure top test and also ensures that air will not be introduced into the gas supply. My stoves gas shut off in in the basement ceiling below the stove but it is not finished or enclosed in the basement. I can go down and reach up and turn it off anytime. I think that is the norm in older homes. there should never be a finished ceiling hiding the valve or it needs moved to behind the stove. Not sure but I think if its like mine and you are not changing the gas line you could leave it. I did put a gas overflow prevention valve behind my stove since it cam with the new flex hose for some extra safety

Check your local code carefully before connecting this cooktop. Some codes do not permit flexible gas connectors but rather they require all gas appliances to be plumbed with iron pipe the full distance. For this reason the appliance manufacturers allow a rather large opening through the back of the appliance cabinet and the actual point of connection to the gas regulator in the appliance is in the front 1/3 to 1/2 of the appliance frame. This permits running a gas pipe from the wall and extending out about 12" to a gas cock type shutoff valve. With the large opening the range or cooktop can then be slide in place and the end of the gas line with the shut off will now be inside the appliance cabinet. Once in place the cooktop can be raised allowing access to connect a nipple from the stop cock to a union and a second nipple from the union to the 1/2 female iron pipe thread in the appliance gas regulator thus completing a rigid gas pipe connection. When using a flexible connect the codes prohibit a flexible connector from passing through any floor, wall partition, cieling or appliance housing. Ref: International Residential Code IRC-2422.1.2 Uniform Plumbing Code UPC-1212.0X2 Properly when connecting a gas range or cooktop with a flexible connector you must first install a rigid pipe extending from the gas regulator to the exterior of the appliance cabinet and the transition for rigid pipe to flex pipe must occur outside the appliance housing.

I have not bought any appliances at all yet. Currently there is an electric stove in the old kitchen, I have to talk to the GC who is doing my renovation but I just wanted to see if something like I described was possible, running new gas line in the open wall before the utility company comes out and runs the line to the house.

if it is possible, then time frames don't affect me if it takes them 21 weeks to come out and bring the line tot he house, I'll already have the gas line in the wall and then a plumber just needs to connect the rest in the basement to the main and I can have a gas range instead of living with electric for the next 10-20 years.

Yes, you can (and should) have all the internal plumbing run before the utility runs the line to the house. Just make sure that your plumber and the utility planner have agreed on the location for the future meter installation.

Sure. Just don't depend on their promised timing. I could be much longer. DAMHIK.

Propane to begin with protects against that eventuality.

Thanks for all the comments. I have yet to even get to the appliance choosing stage of the remodel, but I am meeting with the GC tomorrow and I will go over all these questions with them as well.

I just didn't want to look like an idiot asking for something I couldn't get done. Using Propane in the meantime while waiting for the gas main to come to the house could be a great option if the appliance has a conversion kit, I am also fine using my outdoor propane BBQ for months until it gets hooked up inside.

I just didn't want to live with an electric cooktop and my search for induction was looking to be quite costly by comparison.
