That would not be acceptable. I would have it replace.

I would guess one question that will come up is, who specified those details to the fabricators, and that's probably the place to start -- was there a template that was signed off, was there a drawing or other specifications that were being worked from, etc.

However, if the large radius is desired, that's probably an easier fix than wanting all four corners at the smaller radius.

Thanks for the responses! I thought that this was odd but wasn’t sure if this was some new style I never saw before.

We were never asked to approve the template. The only discussion we had about the quartz was the type of edges and the length of overhang on the island.

I like the look of the squarer corner and I would think all 4 corners on an island would be the same.

I would definitely want this addressed if this was my kitchen. I’m surprised that the corner style wasn’t discussed prior to fabrication.

Even if there was a misunderstanding about what type of edge you wanted - why in the world would anyone think someone would want two different profiles in the same kitchen??!!?

While the fabricator might be able to make all of the corners the same as the more rounded one, personally, I don’t really care for that style. I’d want the corners to be as square as possible with just a slight ease to help prevent chipping.

Perhaps as corner A has cabinetry underneath, a larger radius is not possible as the underlying cabinet would show.

Agree with HB and this is done all the time. Where there are cabinets, we usually do an "eased" corner....where there is overhang, there is often a larger radius. But we leave that completely up to the homeowners. I prefer eased on all four. But so many people seemed concerned with "hip bumpers" and little kids getting hurt by pointy corners.

I don't find it odd at all. what I do find odd is that the fabricator didn't have you approve all these decisions.

This won’t help, but I too learned the hard way that YOU MUST BE ON SITE WHEN RENOVATIONS ARE BEING MADE.

Unfortunately, R M is correct. Many times, issues posted on Houzz would have been caught if the homeowner was present. How many posts have there been where someone’s contractor has installed marble mosaic tiles that are two very different colors??!!? I believe that my tile setter would have questioned the few boxes of marble tile that were of a much lessser quality than the rest of the boxes vs. just going ahead and continuing with the installation in my master bathroom regardless of whether I was in the room when he started. But if I hadn’t been home, and he installed it, I would have been furious - and I would have felt that it was very unfair if I was blamed for what happened. I also would have had no recourse against tile retailer because the material had been installed.

In this situation, however, if the OP had been home, it wouldn’t have changed the fact that the countertop had been fabricated with two different corners - or that the homeowner expected a different type of corner treatment than what was done. The countertops would have shown up that way.

While the OP would have been able to stop the installation - the OP would not have been able to prevent the incorrect fabrication. Luckily, the owner of the fabrication company immediately agreed to resolve the issue. It is unfortunate that his employees wasted time installing the countertops - and now have to spend time removing them. I have no idea how long it takes to install these types of countertops but I assume it’s at least 2-3 hrs.

Here’s the issue though with R M’s statement - not everyone is able to stay home all day while work is being performed. Sometimes a new build occurs while the owners live in a different state, or he/she has a demanding job where visits to the house during business hours would be extremely difficult or impossible.

I RARELY came by my house while it was being built - and not one time while the interior finishing work was being done. I was a new associate at 500+ attorney law firm, and my husband was still a prosecutor in a different city. Luckily, there were hardly any issues - and none that required ripping out materials.

I do understand how it would be very beneficial for a homeowner to be present for certain parts of a renovation or new build (e.g., tile installation). When my new cabinets/backsplash/countertops are being installed at my house for my upcoming kitchen renovation, I will do my very best to be there. If I can’t be there, hopefully all the research/planning I’ve done prior to hiring professionals/purchasing materials pays off and everything will go as planned. Fingers crossed.

It is easy for all of us to tell people that they should be there for certain aspects of the project when we have no idea what type of flexibility someone has with his/her employment - or know how many miles are in between home and work (or other difficulties a person may be going through which limits his/her ability to be there). Also, there are MANY posts where people complain about their contractor not showing up when scheduled (sometimes for days/weeks) which would make it very difficult (if not impossible) for a homeowner to be able to plan ahead in order to be present while certain work is performed.

Those of you who have been able to ”babysit” your new home build/renovation, are quite lucky. Not all families are able to have one spouse who stays home/works from home (especially pre-COVID).

@dmac1108 @rh, I have actually been home for almost the entire renovation so far since I have been working remotely. Unfortunately they had missed the original install dates and performed the install the same day we had left for a short vacation. I had a family member at my house to let them in, but she was not familiar with any of our plans.

The funny thing, is that I was delaying our departure until they arrived to make sure I could answer any questions that they had before starting, but they were delayed and we had to leave. To top it off, I asked the owner if he had planned to be there for the start of the project that day and his response was that his team were more than capable of starting and finishing this part of the project without him there. Apparently he was wrong on that. I will be requiring him to be here to start and finish each day his stone ppl are on site to review this going forward, with me there.

Yes: it is best to be at home for home renovations, but that is a luxury not everyone has. When I had my extensive home renovations done, I had the ability to work from home. Later on, I was semi retired and my husband was retired and at home. Renovations are stressful, even if they go smoothly, you are always anticipating something to go wrong, or be delayed. We did some of the renovations ourselves: fixing all wall cracks and nail pops and sanding, priming doors , moldings and walls, washing and rinsing all walls, doors, moldings and ceilings; and we painted the entire home❣️No professional painter would ever have taken the time to do the prep paint work we did. I now have my “ forever “ home renovated to my liking , and all that is left, is picking out new fabric for some curtains, sewing them, and painting my new front door when the weather gets cooler. My fabricator runs a tight ship and submits very detailed CAD layout drawings of each and every top they make. I, as the designer, as well as the homeowner, must sign off on it. It shows color, edge profile, overhang amounts, sink model, grain direction, corner radius, appliance cutouts....etc. Insist on seeing this before you sign a contract or pay for tops. Since my fabricator started doing this 15 years ago, we RARELY have mistakes on the order. Only issues are material issues. It's a great peace of mind for everyone.

I have had the experience of being in the house during renovation work and tradespeople don’t ask me about things they are doing and then, when things aren’t as they should be, act surprised. I don’t think it’s on the homeowner to have to constantly ask or follow workers around and supervise them. Not my job.
