WWYD? A real doozy.
Comments (36)Oh, sigh... I should have known better than to reply because previous experience with Oakley's WWYD queries ought to have taught me that there isn't really much interest in others' viewpoints. Nobody was rude, not one person that I can see. The vast majority proposed that Oakley tactfully, graciously, but firmly, stand up for what she says she believes. Most people also stated that letting it slide was tacit acceptance of unacceptable attitudes. Although most did not, a few suggested confrontation. (if that is what is meant by "unfriending", I don't use FB so I don't know how it works but it sounds confrontational to me - the modern-day equivalent of the "cut direct"). I hope my suggestion which was to address this with Oakley's cousin didn't imply I wanted unpleasantness. I was only suggesting that she has an opportunity to speak up for what she feels is right - and perhaps move someone to a point a bit beyond racism. But I recall previous WWYD queries that devolved into hurt feelings because what was really wanted, apparently, wasn't suggestions or advice, but validation for Oakely's already-made opinion or actions. And Oakley, I don't think anybody was trying to embarrass you about how you write or spell. No long time reader/poster here could fail to perceive the active, intelligent brain inside your head. I think the reason Anele brought it up was to try and allay your concerns about your cousins' writing styles appearing ignorant or uneducated. People have varying abilities to write stuff according to the accepted rules. It often has nothing to with intelligence, or education. There are brain quirks involved, as well. It sounds like this is sore subject for you and that at some point someone made you feel bad about your writing style. I recall the apostrophe thread that you took such umbrage at. At the time I didn't think it was aimed at you, and I still don't. (If there was a thread about why some lazy, unschooled, ignorant people can;t figure out that there;s an apostrophe in contractions, not a semicolon, then I;d know they were aiming square at me. In this case it;s not spelling but typing errors. I wish someone could explain how to exchange the character production of those two keys - it would save me so much time!) I;m sure you can figure out what I mean with all my mis-typed semicolons, just like I can figure what you mean to say with a few extra 'postrophe's thrown in the mix. And the reason I read here is because I'm interested in what ideas posters have about things. If I wanted perfect I'd just read Fowler. If you're determined to take offense when none was intended, we can't stop you. But to my mind it's way too hot this summer to be stewing over something that hasn't happened. if you need a break, take one. Hope to see you back, soon. Comments (15)Hi Glenda, When I used to tell daughter's Female Canine to "sit" she didn't seem to pay a lot of attention. ______________________ Chemocurl, Well done. I didn't know the purchase price. I calculate, though, that one share grew to 144 ... which would make the 100 shares grow to 14,400. ... for better than $969,000. If the guy had started with 104 shares, which would have grown to 14,976 ... at Tuesday's closing price of $66.94 (somewhat lower than when you calculated earlier that day) ... today's value would have been $1,002,493.40. At your quote, it would have been $1,008,034.50 ... $5,541.10 more (a reasonably decent month's pay). Plus ... the dividend rate grew, over the years, more or less in tandem with the share price. Iva Mae, When you go to the "Stock quotes" on Yahoo->Finance, put in "RY.TO", for Royal Bank. If on Yahoo Canada, if you put in "RY" the ".TO" will be added on its own. Try "ENB" for Enbridge, "BCE" for BCE, "GWO" for Great-West Life, "TCK-B" for Teck Cominco, "TA" for TransAlta Utilities, "TD" for TD Canada Trust. There's a place where they offer "Symbol lookup" and if you write the company name in there, it'll tell you the symbol. If you ask for "Bar" chArts, instead of a line joining the daily closing prices over a period, it will give a bar linking the highest and lowest prices at which transactions took place that day, with a little line to the left showing the opening price that day, and one to the right showing the closing price. If, when you have a page where the price information of a given stock is showing, you look over to the left, near the top, there's a place where you can click on "Historical prices" and it will allow you to check the daily, weekly, monthly, etc. price levels of that stock over a given period. As a matter of fact, the price list for JNJ goes back to Jan 2, 1970. And, believe it or not, I didn't know that when I set up the project in the first place. The criteria that I used was to start a couple of years before the first split that appeared on the database that I was using. And not far from the 40-year period that I've heard to be the period during which they increased dividend rate every year. I must confess that I thought it more relevant to put this thread over on "Money Saving Tips" or "Household Finance" ... but thought that it would receive greater exposure here. And that a number of the residents here might find it interesting. Good wishes for managing your income and assets with increasing skilfullness. ole joyful...See MoreHow stupid I am!!!
Comments (26)I did something similar once - I thought the smell would be forever. I did what you did, cleaning wise. I also placed a dish filled with a box of baking soda in there and heated it for 10 seconds and then let it sit overnight. Took it out, wiped the oven down down, put it back in to sit to sit. I didn't use the nuker for three days but replaced the baking soda with a new, shallow dish full twice as I figured the old baking soda wouldn't work as well once it had absorbed a lot of the odor - would "wear it out". That pretty much did the trick. I did make sure to keep the door open after use for about a week to allow the steam to dispense. After cooking, sometimes the smell would be there ever so faintly and I found that leaving toe door open for about 20 minutes to let the steam completely dissipate and dry did the trick. I did wipe it down with a clean damp cloth after using because that smell *did* linger for awhile, but not bad. It didn't affect the tast of anything, including hot water though. I did keep the bowl of baking soda in there when not in use for about three weeks total. Probably longer than needed - the smell was completely gone within about a week. If none of this makes a remarkable difference within about a week, I'd go to the store and do-over, it might be ruined....See MoreEver been shortchanged by bank teller?
Comments (25)Well, well well terri_pacnw "Savings bonds aren't worth face value until maturity. Which can take quite alot of years!" I think thirty year old savings Series E bonds have reached maturity. Duh. In fact at thirty years they reach *final maturity* and no longer earn interest which was why I was cashing them out. BTW the first bank I tried to cash them at told me that they "go right on earning interest" and that I was wrong to think they did not. I decided I did not need to bank at a place where they told lies like that. "There is a form put out every year by the Fed that "caculates" it for you/them." Exactly. That is the method I used. I don't know what the teller was using. Why does it have to be a battle to get banks to do things right? In every case I got my money. "And back to Dilly Dally... Bank's don't have to steal $30 from you..or anyone else.. They have these things called fees..overdraft fees, transfer fees, NSF fees...blah blah blah..Those are legal means that allow the banks to make plenty of money off customers. I believe most banks charge at least $30 for OD or NSF...There are plenty of people out there that have a few of those a month...That's basically FREE money to a bank." No wonder you don't work in banking anymore. You see, you should READ my post. I NEVER HAD AN OVERDRAFT! Duh. The bank tried to steal money through trickery. When I closed my account THEY picked the amount of $879.63. (This was after they tried to cheat me by trying to give me only $30 which they silently corrected after I balked.) I signed for the amount as it looked to be correct. THEY then said two weeks later that the closed account was overdrawn by TWENTY FIVE CENTS and I owed them. They set me up for this scam. I suppose you are going to say I should have been more diligent and scrutinized the forms that they gave me to see if they were trying to bamboozle me out of money. That this is all my fault. I am a big dope. Houstonmoms says: "I am speechless about what to say about dilly dally...perhaps there is a lack of banking knowledge there." No, actually I have great "banking knowledge", which is why IN EVERY SINGLE CASE I got the money they tried to cheat me out of. They didn't just give me money to "be nice". It doesn't work that way. You see, what banks will do is try to make you look like a forgetful fool. In the case of the interest on the CDs they refused to give me when I tried to cash them out, they said they were sending me quarterly checks with the interest for years. Hahah. Of course this was a big lie. They even tried to sweet talk me with "Were you getting checks in the mail and cashing them, not knowing where the money was coming from??" Yeah right. When I refused to leave the bank without my money they threatened to call the police and have me arrested for "being disruptive". No need to! I was going to go to the both the police and the State Banking Commission and reporting them to their own corporate headquarters. And I did. And I got my money. Believe me they didn't just decide to give me tens of thousands of dollars just to make me go away. I was right. They could not produce any "canceled checks" nor was my paperwork filled out that the interest would be dispersed that way. And the fact that I had to go through with this nonsense TWICE is ridiculous. The excuse they gave me for sending all my statements and canceled checks to some strangers home in another city was that "my account got mingled with someone else's". How does something like that happen? This is not due to "my lack of banking knowledge". Want to hear another bad banking experience? I was cashing out at another bank and they gave me a big check. At this time I KNEW to check the amount, even the CENTS so there would be no nightmare. I peeked into the envelope and the amount was correct. What I did not check was THE NAME on the check. Yup. They got it wrong. I had presented it at another bank to put into my account there and they refused to take it. The check was worthless to me. I was shocked. I was back at home screaming on the phone to the bank that did this. Time was of the essence as I was closing on a house the next day and they were not going to want to hear that I had a "problem with my bank". At least in this case the bank saw the error and bent over backwards to correct it. This was only after going through a talking to a whole bunch of employees and getting supervisor after supervisor who did not understand how banking works. I had to explain to them how banking works. I had to explain to them what *POD* means. Yup. They had put my brother's name on the check. Don't they TRAIN these people before they let them loose handling money and chacks? When I had gotten married I took my husband's paycheck, which he had signed on the back, to my bank to be deposited in my checking account. The bank refused to deposit it in my account "because it was made out to someone else". Geesh. They should have a school to train tellers. But how, HOW does this stuff happen?? It really makes me wonder about bank "error" that I don't catch. My parents are very elderly and I wonder if they are being scammed by banks and do not realize it?...See Moremaddielee
