River Birch Tree losing most of it's bark!
Comments (9)I have been told (but can't verify) that when river birches have had an exceptional growth year, meaning that they have put on a large annual growth ring, the bark exfoliates in larger sheets. Anyone else heard this? Might be what is happening here. hortster...See MoreDiff between River Birch and 'Heritage' River Birch
Comments (6)I simply love the overall look of 'Heritage' River Birch trees. The 'Dura Heats' are reported to withstand planting areas that drain better and that may encounter more drying out in the hottest parts of summer, when rains are less apt to occur. Personally though, the 'Dura Heat' birches seem to display a little more yellow than I would prefer to see in a birch tree's bark. The leaves also do not seem to be as nicely shaped or colored as the Heritage Birch tree's leaves. Bottom line; I guess whichever birch cultivar you plant needs to the cultivar that is more compatable with the soil conditons and climate that the tree will encounter in its intended planting site. Still personally I prefer the Heritage Birch tree cultivar over most others. There are even prettier cultivars than Heritage Birch, but any those others that happen to tolerate my USDA zone area seem to be more prone to Birch borers or even other pests, which feed off the leaves of such birch trees....See MoreRiver Birch Confusion
Comments (10)My DH and I did them. We have about 17 that are connected with downspouts and spigots and 7 more that just sit under the spouts. I have a water transfer pump. It sits outside the barrels and a hose goes into the opening to pump water. The ones in the picture are high enough that I can just attach a hose or the soakers to them. It takes a while but the water will come out slowly. If you look around you can get the barrels free. I only paid $10 each for mine but the fittings added up to a lot. Brass spigots are at least $5.00 each. The ones on the other side of the house are connected to a soaker hose or I can use the spigot. I have had these 5 years or more. We are looking into getting a well. In case anyone is interested the price quoted is $11,000. if they hit water within 500ft. This includes house and irrigation pumps. Since I have 2 acres, over 3000 hostas and many ferns and a large greenhouse and tropicals, a pond and pool. I will need all the water I can get. 25 mins a day every other day would do just my containers. I had all these plants way before the drought. Don't you think I should be 'Grandfathered' in before the new rules.?...See MoreClump River Birch or River Birch.....Is there a difference?
Comments (1)A clump river birch is a river birch with multiple trunks. All the trunks should be from the same tree/root-system, but some cheapo nurseries stick single trunk specimens together for quick production. This practice (bundling multiple separate singe-trunk specimens together) frequently causes problems later as the trees grow and start splitting apart....See Morekrnuttle
