I probably won't do the purse thing, hubs will probably hate that idea. But a gal can dream . . . it's not really my style, but with an adorable dog like that it will be hard to resist. On the surface I am a tomboy but I have an inner princess. That would be another possible name but I don't want to give her any ideas . . . I'm the princess in this pack! (Kidding! Sort of! ;)

My friend has a Coton de Tulear. She is an experienced dog mom and always trains her dogs from puppydom. She has had shepherds, mixes and Westies and all have been well-behaved, pretty quiet dogs.

But OMG, that Coton is a whole different story. He is a Velcro dog to her husband and as long as her husband is with the dog, there's no problem. Any other time, the dog barks its little head off, constantly...without stopping for sleeping or eating. They've tried leaving the Coton with trainers, dog boarding facilities, family members and friends when they need to travel. All report the same results. This dog can bark for days without stopping, no exaggeration. YMMV, I sincerely hope.

Do you guys do nicknames? we do. In my house If we named her ”Josie” theres a real chance she may become ”Jojo”. I’d be thrilled to share a name with that cutie!

Josie was on our list of names for our youngest dog, who is now almost 4, but for me, I felt like it didn’t roll off my tongue very easily if that makes sense. I would go with Josie if DH really likes it but would prob end up mostly calling her Jojo or just Jo.

Our older dog is named Sydney and I have never really liked it but she was a retired dog from a breeder who came pre-named. We always call her Syd but then people think she’s a boy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jojoco, Josie in our house would also get called jojo, jocomo, jono, jonomono, etc. Sandy would surely get called Sandra Dee and sung to ”look at me, I’m Sandra Dee, lousy with adorability”. We do this to our cats all the time, but then cats don’t care what you think their name is.

Jumping ahead because I need to get back to work. First, that pup is adorable. Second, training “smalls“ is a different ball game. You have to start with ”watch me” because were so big. This is a fantastic book on thetopic and has helped me train a Yorkie and a Maltese mix.

If we had cats, then "Josie" would be perfect. My friend has had two of the pups and no problems with boarding or barking. Thanks for the tip Spanish, gonna check it out asap! Being as we are semi-retired and don't go out much, the dog won't be left alone a lot, but we intend on introducing her to the friends who we would board with if we ever had to, as part of the socialization process. I could even hire a house sitter to stay here with the dog if need be. But we haven't taken a long vacation in over three years, so I doubt this will be a common problem with the dog anyway. We want to get a camper for travel, we are sick of motels and a lot of the motel world is going downhill, we have observed prior to the pandemic but at a faster rate now. With a camper we could take the dog. All the more reason a small non shedding breed will be a plus over the long haul.

While crate training is very popular and works with a lot of dogs, our Charlie, hated it from the moment we tried to introduce it, we did all the steps to get him used to it, but he wouldn't stay in it for one second and cried when he saw it. I figured it's just like raising kids, all things don't work for all children. My daughters named him Charlie, but I usually call him Bubba or Bubba-louie and my husband calls him Ding Dong. My daughters boyfriend calls him Chuckles. He answer to them all and so far doesn't seem to have an identity crisis. Have fun, I was never a dog person, but Charlie changed my heart about that.

Certainly won't force the dog into a crate if she doesn't take to it. My friend's dog was a puppy mill rescue and loved the crate. Most of the people I know who use crates do so because the dog is fine with it. My friend left the crate in the car and just opened the door for the dog and she went right in, loved riding "shotgun" in her crate in the back of the car with the seat down. The door was open so she could have gotten out if she wanted to.

The great thing about puppies is that they can be trained and if you want them to like a crate you can do it. I did that with a dog who was highly resistant to a crate but she sleeps in it now peacefully and happily every night and has for a year because she's highly destructive during a thunderstorm so she must go in it during thunder.

A puppy is so very exciting!!! My only hint is: don’t pet the puppy when it is scared. Don’t pick it up when it is scared.

How wonderful, I’m so happy for you! We’ve always had one big dog or another, but have also had small dogs along with them. Our small ones have been Tibetan Spaniels, which run 12-14 pounds.

My main suggestion/warning is that these little ones can easily trip you if you're not careful, especially in the kitchen while you’re cooking and preparing a meal. Dangerous for your sweet little fur baby, as well as for you! Our Sasha has pretty much learned to stay in her kitchen bed while we’re cooking, but our daughter’s little India (also a Tibbie) is a tripping nightmare when they’re visiting!

My suggestion is to never allow your pup to “cruise the kitchen“ for crumbs or food dropped while you’re in there. Make her stay out of the kitchen then, or keep a place for her in there but somewhere out of the way. Under the table is a good place but we, sadly, don't have a table in ours!

Awe, what a sweetie! Poodle mixed with any breed is going to be so much fun! Congrats! One thing that our vet had encouraged us to do (and I often suggest) is to get pet insurance. Everyone has their own opinion about it but for us, it was good advise. The insurance has allowed me to provide our dog with good medical care and I’ve never had to compromise because I couldn’t afford it. I went with Trupanion and have had good luck with it but there are so many options out there that one might be a good fit for you.

Lynn my late cousin had a Tibetan spaniel. She got it as a rescue if you can believe it. Someone found it by the side of a road! He was the best dog, but yes, a tripper. He loved you so much he was always underfoot. But he survived. We would have gotten one of those dogs if we could have found one. It's really unusual that my cousin just stumbled onto one. She wasn't looking for any dog in particular, just a companion. She named him Buddy. He was a lucky dog. We miss him and my cousin. She made sure to leave plans for him going to a good home with people he knew, thankfully. Not us though. I think she went outside the family to avoid any hurt feelings as she had a lot of competitive kids and grandkids.

What can I possibly add to what everyone else has said? She will be such a joy, I know! We await thousands of puppy pictures. Literally. Thousands.

A couple more suggestions::

1) Start early and teach her to sit and stay at the door until you say ”Release“. You absolutely do NOT want your dog just running out the door whenever its opened! Although many times it would probably be safe, it’s those other times when it’s not that you’re preparing for. Trust me on that one! And, if you take her with you camping, you could easily lose her in a campground, woods, or wherever.

2) Buy a good car seat to snap her into, via a harness. Elevated, so that she can see out the windows. Oh, and with a removable, washable cover! And a sunshade for the window closest to her car seat, when needed.

She's a doll! The only thing I can suggest is to use the same food the breeder was giving her, and ask the breeder when to switch to a brand you prefer, & how much to give her the first time. My puppy almost died because I introduced her to a new food which she wolfed down and I had no idea that was a big NO. I had to call the vet.

Interesting to think about what to do in the kitchen. We have a "one butt" kitchen as it is, hubs and I are always falling all over each other when we try to coordinate tasks in there. Add a small dog underfoot and it could be a real problem. We may have to install a dog gate . . . We have a little cubbie right now where we keep the recycling bin but doesn't seem like a dog would want to just sit under there . . . but maybe. I could always move the recycling bin out onto the porch or something. Having a small cramped house is one reason we needed a small dog. We are creating a play area for her in one of the back rooms. I am a big spiller in the kitchen. My best friend's dog would stalk me while I was cooking in the kitchen at his house, as we often did. She knew sooner or later the opportunity would come . . .

Hubs lived in a small one bedroom apartment when he had his German shepherd, but he said he would take her on long walks after work and also go places on the weekends with the dog where she could explore all day.

We live on the corner of two busy roads, so keeping the dog safe is going to be one of our major concerns. That's one reason we had to find a dog that was not a huge runner or chaser. Not that this dog won't do those things, but hopefully we can manage it. I know several people who trained their dogs not to leave their side until they said "release." Always for the dog's protection. My one friend almost had his dog get hit by a car so he worked long and hard on training her. She would not cross a road until he told her she could by saying "cross." She was a husky.

That was another thing we had to agree to, to keep feeding her the food she was used to. It was in the contract. They are using Blue Buffalo and we are fine with that. This dog does not eat a lot of food, which is another plus in the expense department. But geeze, we are going to have to get a lot of dog accoutrements!!

My only experience with dogs that small is arms length with friends and family - what I've noticed is there *can* be tendency to be very lax on training because of their size. If she doesn't sit - no big deal, or jumping - eh, not like getting jumped on by a lab so no big deal. I've known a couple of well trained little dogs and they are special because in my experience they are not the norm.

Wow, that is quite a "contract." Who is going to know what you feed her? Is she going to write them, LOL. What is the penalty if you violate the terms? We know the founders of that brand (you'd be flabbergasted how much money is in dog food let's just say) but my dog hates that dogfood! LOL

I second the recommendation for pet insurance. We have Trupanion which is essentially a catastrophic insurance (doesn't pay for regular visits/shots, etc) but there are now lots of choices in the marketplace.

Mtn, we had similar contracts with our puppies. If I remember correctly, it’s connected to the health warranty. As in, if you change the dog’s diet within the first (6 months? whatever the warranty is) and she gets sick, don’t come crying to me.

Oh, she's adorable! Congratulations... what a wonderful addition she'll be to your lives, and you to hers.

I've trained 2 dogs in my adult life in a family environment who were well-behaved and so dear to us, and the main takeaways I learned for my next dog are:

1. Paying attention to my tone of voice, and the power of positive reinforcement.

2. Socializing them with other dogs and children early on.

3. Food is important... when I fed them as puppies, I would set the food down, remove it, put it back, put my fingers in it, etc. so they didn't learn protection of their food. This was especially important when my kids were in charge of feeding them. Food supply is pack hierarchy,

4. I had to teach my kids this, too--if we are ever to give our dog a nibble of food, it only occurred after we were finished eating, and only was offered in the dog's food dish. This prevented "begging" which my gullible family would have too easily indulged otherwise.

I had large dogs, and I'm not trained in canine obedience. But these were tips I picked up from vets and research, and my dogs were just the best. I miss them, and I wish you so much happiness with your new girl!

My best advice is training classes to train you both in the latest methods. We have a giant poodle mix and keeping her busy is so important. The poodle meant she’s not much of a people pleaser but she is very food motivated so that helped. Ours is a little high strung and sensitive but socializing early and often (8-16 weeks) is crucially important. If we hadn’t done that I fear to think how fear reactive she would be since she tends that way anyway temperamentally

Yes, my good friends have a poodle almost exactly like yours Robo. Great companion, great with people, but full of "personality." She's a good dog, but definitely with a "creative" mind . . .

The contract doesn't say we have to feed our dog the same feed forever, just during the puppy phase. And yes, it is a health thing. I never would have known about switching feed being dangerous but it makes sense. Obviously consistency is good if it is a consistent healthful habit.

The biggest thing we will have to work with is not spoiling such a cutie. But I think we can handle it Hubs already has a new granddaughter to spoil and he's not indulgent with her. In fact, he annoys me when he tries to "train" her, lol! He worked out a "training regime" that would get her crawling and then walking in no time. Or so he said. I said, "Give her a break, let her enjoy each phase for what it is." But it was harmless fun for grandpa. And I'm a teacher and biologist so pretty rational when it comes to animals, even cute ones. We want a companion, not a toy.

In my experience, dogs really cue in on nonverbal, subliminal and environmental signals way more than humans give them credit for most of the time. At least the smart ones. They pick up on tone and mood which can often contradict a verbal statement or command. That's my biggest fear, how the dog is going to react with my Dad, who has a serious anxiety disorder and a big gruff guy. He annoys the heck out of my husband and I'm sure the dog will pick up on that. He annoys me too, but I try to have compassion for him and keep saying the Serenity Prayer when I am with him, or sing "Let It Go!" from Frozen.

My Dad never misses an opportunity to put me and my husband down or point out a problem, made up or not, and I'm sure the dog and the dog's behavior will become part of that, he can't help himself, it is an illogical compulsion. He refuses treatment for it. We already have boundaries with him so the dog can become part of that, but kind of sad that he probably won't enjoy the puppy, he will see it as a ball of problems. This happens with every single thing in his life, he cannot enjoy anything at all anymore. It doesn't really matter how cute, delicious, kind, wonderful, funny, beautiful or whatever the good qualities that come into his life, he has a compulsion to pick things apart. No logic can control it. Choosing a parking space upsets him, so I can only imagine how he is going to view the dog. Theoretically he should either like it or ignore it, but I know he will obsess about it. But he obsessed constantly so that's not going to stop me from getting and enjoying a dog. He doesn't live with us, just visits occasionally each week.

If him obsessing on the negative was too much of an obstacle, I would have never married hubs. We managed to do it without too many issues. Sadly, back then my cousin was alive and she managed my Dad. My husband is a dog whisperer and my cousin was a Dad whisperer. At least my Dad. She was non threatening to him. He loved her little dog, but I know my father has a whole different approach to me and what I do.

Here is my advice, particularly after looking at pictures of the Coton…find a good, calming groomer early. Josie is going to need grooming, that’s the downside of the HUGE upside of having a non-shedder. Honestly, even though she won’t need a cut at that point, I’d take her in for a soothing bath at the groomer’s at around 16 weeks to get her used to going. If they like the groomer it makes life so much easier. My Cavachon is absolutely smitten with his groomer…I live in fear of her moving or changing professions!

Oh, and totally agree about little dog training…our large(r), short-hair, mutt-y, shedding dog was soooo much easier to train, and honestly, has a much easier, ”doggy” personality than the Cavachon. The smaller dog is more like a person, and while we love him to pieces, he definately has some annoying personality traits…namely clingyness and a bit of nervousness. I really wish we had done a better job training him. I feel if we had treated him more like a dog from the start, he’d be easier.

Yes Mtn that's her "glam shot." The breeder also likes to keep in contact with her puppies and get weekly photos. Easy enough these days. That's why we feel so good about getting a puppy from her, she helps new dog owners all along the way. Or at least that's the claim and my friend's experience so far.

Mtn, I can't stress enough how important it is for a new puppy to continue eating the same food it's gastric system is used to. Vet told me the same thing when it was almost too late. I don't ever want to witness what I did that day when I almost lost my Gracie girl.

I mentioned this not long ago but I had a Boston Terrier named Josie. Her AKC name was Josephine Bonaparte, and I called her Josie of Jo Pie.

If you want to switch food, just be sure to do it slowly. Add just a little the first week with mostly all what the pup is used to. It can easily take more than a month. If she isn't tolerating the change well, go back to all the old stuff and then try adding in something different. You can always get recommendations from your vet which is probably the best way to go. For a while, no grain was all the rage, then dogs ended up having issues, so grain seems to be back on the menu, boys.

If I were a betting gal, I'd say the name is going to be Josie, because that's what hubs wants, and the dog is something hubs has wanted (me too, no question, but not able to devote time to training so I've not taken the plunge). Also since I don't dislike the name, no reason to pick something else, if it makes hub happy, I'm happy.
