Why can't California have mosquitoes?
Comments (26)There is no large general abatement "program" for mosquitos or any other bugs. Abatement is driven by conditions, which usually means there is standing water which could be a breeding ground. Abatement usually consists of removing the water. The only spraying program (other than agricultural spraying) I'm aware of was several years ago when an introduction of non-native species was creating problems. Even then, it was limited to areas where needed. California is subtropical, and very arid in comparison to anywhere east of the Rockies, as is most of the West. This has a significant effect on populations of pests who thrive on moisture (of course, we've got other critters....like scorpions!). The warm water of the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico (because of the Gulf Stream) causes the air blown inland towards the east coast, south and midwest to be very moist and much of the weather there is influenced by this (especially when it mixes with cold air coming from Canada...watch out!). However, west of the Rockies there is no influence on the climate of this warm, moist air. The Pacific is much colder than the Atlantic, so the air blowing inland contains far less moisture, and the dry, arid inland air (or air blown down from Alaska) keeps things dry. The most we get is thick fog ("June gloom") from the mix in spring and summer, as the ocean begins to warm up. So...we have far fewer rainstorms and less groundwater overall. Most of our water comes from the Sierra snowpack (thank you, Mr. Mulholland, and we're sorry about Mono lake). In the winter the Jet Stream shifts south, and winter storms come our way (usually, anyway), which is why it's our rainy season, and why some raging rivers dry up in the summer months. The further north you are, the more rain you'll have. Hence the greenery of coastal Washington and Orego (although inland Washington is much more arid than you'd expect, because some storms are blocked by the Cascade chain). So, because we are more arid, we have fewer pests that require standing water to breed. Nevertheless, have I mentioned the fleas? Or ants? Coastal regions are greatly influenced by the Pacific Ocean air, making these areas almost perfect, climate-wise. There are only a handful of places on earth with similar climates: the south of France and the coast of Chile. But you should not expect "tropical" here. The dry air greatly affects temperature, more so as you travel inland. There can be a 30 degree drop between daytime temps and nightime lows....See MoreMosquito solution for gardeners
Comments (2)a net hat and long sleeves is about the only thing you can do short of all out chemical warfare. personally i can't stand the hats, so i just spray OFF pretty heavily and have very few bother me. that or i bring my wife out to the garden, cause if she is around they will all attack her and not me!...See MoreMosquitos LOVE me..... Comments (28)VII.Excerpt from poem about mosquitos A.Yet what an aura surrounds you; Your evil little aura, prowling, and casting numbness on my mind That is your trick, your bit of filthy magic: Invisibility, and the anaesthetic power To deaden my attention in your direction. But I know your game now, streaky sorcerer. Queer, how you stalk and prowl the air In circles and evasions, enveloping me, Ghoul on wings Winged Victory. J.D. Gillett http://www.ask.com/web?qsrc=178&o=0amp;l=dir&dm=&q=what%20attracts%20mosquitoes%20to%20humans or just go to www.ask.com and type in what attracts mosquitoes in their search. Interesting stuff. Why not fool the critters, wear his clothes when you next get attacked? If he has a mustache, then you will have to glue one on and you'll look like 'Lucy' in one of her skits!...See MoreMosquitos!!
Comments (71)Flowerkitty- perhpas what you are using is no different than a chemical that is toxic to an organism, kills the small organisms quick and has possible side effects which occur in geometric channels. Never before have humans had the convience of so many chemicals to use in so many diverse ways...the toxic levels are becoming more tolerated, that is the part that scares me, the tolerance is in attitude and not in an evolved sense of way or immune sense. Today I was thnking that what theheck is the purpose of mosquitoes?! As I pondered the idea, I thought about the animals who brave the mosquitoes daily as I rush indoors to shelter from the little vampires. I was then thinking how grateful it was other animals who could fed the mosquitos, rather than I or my family memebers and friends and friends I have yet to meet. And how that all helps my garden. Their is alot of nitrogen in mosquitoes, bat guano is great stuff... I love the mosquito garb for gardening ! Please understand what the chemicals are that you are applying to your skin...your skin is the largest organ of your body...what youapply to it soaks in and is ingested sort of speak. Are you causing your body to repair and heal from toxic usage or are you nuturing yourself with something that causes no side effects or risks? Also there is ways to dance with the mosquito in my mind. The woods is the most difficult as this shades moist environment is a fav for these creatures to live and breed. I find that on windy days I can usually move about outside with less mosquito confrontations. Also, I learn to dress appropriately, too. One learns not to be fashionable when fending from mosquitos. So, sorry, cover up and protect with clothes instead of the chems for me. I have empathy for folks in very warm climates where covering up for protection is extrememly uncomfortably and too warm to function. The never ending perils of mosquitoes biting people. Eating fresh grown garlic has been the greatest relief I have ever noticed in mosquitoe control and of course the netting garb outfits! I dont get the same results with older garlic that had been harvested and stored for awhile, and especially I dont feel any results for processed garlic or garlic salt. It has to be juicy fresh out of the ground and darn that I cant grow it to be on a constant harvesting all through mosquito season! regards and cheers...See Moreparty_music50
