Furniture living room Design Dilemma

I am between two layouts with a small L couch and one chair. The layout where the couch is closest to dining room creates more of a separate living space but when I put the couch closest to entry door I feel like it creates more of an openness of the entire room. Which layout would be best for that space? The one where the couch is closest to dining room table or the one where the chair is closest to dining room table? Trying to think this through before I purchase furniture.

I prefer chair closest to table. It gives a more open feeling and can include people sitting at the counter in the conversation

Have you tried the couch against part of the front window? I feel like that would open up the whole room so much and wouldn’t block much light bc of the size of the couch and it being white itself. Just a thought. It would also allow conversation to flow throughout the entire space. If not this option, I agree with you and I like the couch closest to the front door. My worry with that would be it being an all white couch and the back of the couch getting dirty from mud, dirt, etc. being tracked in and out of the house. Good luck!

If accurate in your drawing, I am assuming you are leaving the space behind the sofa for a walk way. I’m not in favor of that because everything is off-center. Position the rug directly in the middle of the room, sofa on long wall, love seat under back windows and to balance the two seater on the other end, add two chairs. Ikea piece to the right of the fireplace and something above it to balance the window. Remove the brown table left of fireplace and add a smaller Ikea piece in white for this effect: (except mirror goes over larger piece).

The (real, licensed) architect drew in the same layout we’ve seen in suburban model homes everywhere. He freely admitted that these layouts are not his strong suit and didn’t want to spend any time in it. I didn’t share the drawing because I don’t want to get hung up on tweaking the original idea. I thought starting with a blank slate would inspire more creativity. Also, I’d prefer to have a round dining table for better interaction when we’re all together. I’d also like to avoid placing the TV above the fireplace if there are better alternatives.

The color will be light but not white. The large window has a deep (13 inch) ledge that I could not create in this app. I put pictures/decorations there. Which is why I was not placing against the window. Good idea though

IMO, the couch facing the dining table makes the dining set your focal point. Which I personally would not want.
