My Favorite Plant Sale
Comments (17)I moved to Portland, Oregon in 1984 from Philadelphia (with a four year stop at a university in Utah). A roommate in college took me home to Oregon at Christmas and I fell in love with the countryside. We are wet and green in the winter, which is FINE with me because hate the extreme cold and snow, and our summers are usually predictably sunny but not too hot. I remember back in Philly when you planned an outing in the summertime, there was always a good chance it would be rained out. It rains once in a while during the summer in Portland, but not commonly. I have spent every baseball season, the whole season, under an umbrella--the first half because it is rainy, and the second hald because it is sunny and I am a melanoma surviver and don't do sun. We have our four seasons here, but wetness aside, none are severe. I love it. We have experienced a huge growth over the last twenty years, which disgusts my native Oregonian husband plenty--especially the Californians! I remember a time when the Oregon state line had a welcome sign which said, "Welcome to Oregon! Enjoy your visit!" After receiving a lot of flak for that, the state now has a sign which says something along the lines of just "Welcome to Oregon." I am a transplant, so I cannot complain about our surging population, but some of our native Oregonians sure do! I have a son who now lives in Seattle and I love to visit him there. It seems like almost everyone has some sort of garden in their yard--everyone makes an effort to put a cheerful face on their front yards, even if it is only a feeble one. Seattle is rainy all winter and sunny all summer, but it has this lovely breeze in the summer that comes off the lakes and the ocean, so it never seems hot to me in Seattle during the summer months. There are not too many roadblocks to having a spectacular garden in the Pacific NW if you want to--if you have plenty of money, plenty of acreage, plenty of time, plenty of energy, and plenty of imagination. Temperate weather and availability of plant life and knowledgeable resources abound. That said, it took me many years to discover why my own gardens did not always do so well. My garden beds are oh, so slightly recessed or sunken, and water sort of just pools there over the rainy winter. Once I figured that out, I have been trying to build up my beds with good dirt and compost to make them higher and provide sharper drainage, but this is harder to do with established beds. I have SO many new plants this year because I had to almost start from scratch (landscaper pulled most of my good plants in an effort yo help me clean up my beds), so I can't wait to see what does well for me over the winter. AND I still have lots of bulbs to put in and I am placing a big order with Select Seeds!!! :-) It is also iteresting to observe our many microclimates, here and everywhere else. Something rhat does well in my yard can do so poorly in my friend's yard across the street. It is one of many things I find fascinating about gardening! Oops! I am sorry to run on so much! Thanks for listening to me ramble about something I love....See MoreWah! My favorite house is for sale.
Comments (20)Two stories: 1. I have friends who bought a house in a much desired older neighborhood that rarely had homes come on the market. They ended up buying a nice two story, but rather standard, newer home in that neighborhood. While working on the house, a beautiful old stone house went on the market in the same neighborhood. They immediately bought it, and then put the old/new house on the market. 2. My daughter and son-in-law are in the market for a new house in their current neighborhood. They had previously been interested in an older home with a large yard and very nice architecture (but couldn't afford it at the time.) That home never sold and eventually went off the market. The owners were smokers. Fast forward to a year later when my daughter and husband decide they need a larger home. My daughter went to this house and knocked on the door. She mentioned that she and her husband liked the house and asked if it was going back on the market. The wife answered the door and said that she would think about it, but that the reason the home was taken off the market was because her husband was ill. The owner took my daughters name and number and said she would call. She did call once, and said that her husband was still ill, but that she had not forgotten about my daughter and husbands interest. She would call back later. Well, that call never came. A couple of months later, my daughter took her then 1 year old on a walk and saw the lady outside. She went up to her and asked again about the house. The lady was so nice and relieved to see my daughter. She explained that she had lost her name and number. Her husband was dying, and Hospice was called in. She said that she would be selling her house eventually. A week later, my daughter received a note from the lady saying how she would love to have "such a cute young family" living in her house. A few weeks ago, the lady's son called my daughter and SIL. He said that his father was still hanging on, but when he passed, he [the son] would be in charge of selling the home. They have communicated a couple more times. His father died this past week. :( Now the problem! My daughter and her husband have listed their home and have only had 2 showings in a month. They are very discouraged....See MoreFavorite chips to accompany your favorite sandwich!
Comments (23)In Adamstown PA there is company called Goods. They make 2 kinds of chips: The blue box - kettle cooked in lard. The red box - thinly cut and more in line with most mass produced chips today. Most people around here specify the blue box...YUM! As in...."should I get chips for the party?" "yes. Goods" (and then almost as an afterthought, but just to be sure..) "....in the blue box!" But sadly I almost never have chips at home anymore. Too tempting,,,,and did I mention they are fried in lard? Lard has about 5 times the saturated fat compared to canola. But, if f I was eating a sandwich with them, it would be fried sweet bologna with mustard and chips in the sandwich....See More67% off Staub at Nordstrom rack
Comments (8)Thanks for sharing! Just yesterday i was looking for the 4qt cocotte in white at the Holiday $99 price and couldn't find it-- alas, I read this too late as it is now sold out on Nordstrom Rack too. I can get it but not at the christmas deep discount. (I already bought the turquoise-- but may give it as a gift) I plan to use the 4qt for my overnight steel cut oats. I prepare enough for the week over one night and then only need to heat up each morning. This method of preparing steel cut oats was the most exciting thing I have discovered this year LOL. Staub is definitely sold at MSRP.. especially the larger sizes but i wouldn't buy one full price. There have been more sales than usual this year. It is always reduced at Christmas--- which is when i typically add to my collection. ETA: FWIW i have not read good things about staub ceramics. I would recommend researching-- I am a fan/have only used the enamel coated cast iron....See MoreOakley
