Which runner for my stairs?

Its down to these two. Looking for an updated, clean look. One is pricier than the other but both are excellent quality and all wool. i dont want to get something because its a ”good deal.”

Ignore the stripped off paint on the left side railing, it will be painted black.

Here is a closeup look at the samples:

There are a few area rugs nearby; this one at the front door at the foot of the stairs,

and these are in the hallway at the top of the stairs

thanks for all the votes! jejvtr: yep, we're building a new home and I've got little ones. The runner is obviously something we can always add later, just thought that while the installers were gonna be here to do the bedrooms, we'd throw that in too. I grew up in an old colonial with wood 'servants' stairs and fell down them a ton. Don't really know how much a little carpet would have helped, but maybe a little bit of cushion! It also doesn't help that our builder just recently fell down his staircase while holding his infant daughter (thankfully she's okay, but a big scare and overnight in the hospital), so he's now a huge supporter. I'll always take someone's .02 though!!!

The smaller pattern should be on the stairs. When you consider how much of the repeat will show on the stair, the Chateau will look better. Here's some examples of smaller pattern vs. larger pattern Here's the Damask on stairs. It actually gets kind of lost on the stairs as you can't see the pattern repeat well Here's the Chateau, it really pops. But maybe you want it to be more subtle. If so, pick the Damask.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it getting more soiled than the rug since most walk up and down the center and not along the edge.

Stair runner help!! How do I get them to fix this?

There is only one way to fix this and that is to fully carpet the upper stairs keeping to the left where my arrow is to show where you step juts out as well as to the right where again my arrow is where again your stair juts to the right. Follow these lines to the bottom which is centered between your posts. If the carpet store was out to measure this and do the layout they would have noticed this HOPEFULLY. If you did the measuring and ordering then you are stuck with a partial redo as this is the proper way to carpet these stairs. My image is crude but you get the idea.

A border would look great. subtle pattern and texture . Very tasteful!

Agreed the one with the smaller pattern. Your other rugs are beautiful btw!

Thanks all, well, as is usually the case, consensus seems to be with the one that is my first choice as well! It is the more expensive one of course!! Thoughts on a border? I think it would look nice but wonder about stains on it potentially. The runner is wool which cleans up beautifully but a solid cotton binding may not.

I like the herringbone, but wouldn’t do a border. You’ve got the beautiful wainscoting, which IMO should be more of the star of the stairway. I would not want to draw attention to the outer edge of the runner.
