The left side of the bed is sometimes the right side of the bed to get out on.

This reminds me of Auntie Mame when she was being told to mount a horse on the left side, and she said, "My left side or the horse's left side?"

Getting up on the wrong side of the bed

There is a centuries-old tradition – perhaps superstition is a better word – that right is right and left is wrong. The fact that right-handed people are numerically superior to lefties probably has a lot to do with this, but it’s nevertheless a fact of life, as every born left-hander can attest.

This expression is simply another case in point. It originally was “You got out of the bed the wrong way” or “…with the left leg first.” The ancient superstition had it that you’d be unlucky if you put your left foot on the floor first. The same thing was true if you were foolish enough to put your left shoe on first. Naturally, if your day was ruined before it had scarcely started, you were bound to be grumpy and ill-tempered all day long. And that’s what people mean when they accuse you of having got up on the wrong side of the bed.

I was told that you should align yourself with magnetic North when you sleep and avoid sleeping with your body aligned E/W.

As for determining which side of the bed is left or right, that is determined when you are standing at the foot of the bed, facing the bed. At least that is how we describe night stands on either side of the bed.

I sleep on the left side of the bed, but when I get out of bed, my right foot touches the floor first.

If the bed is against the wall, it's best to get up on the open side.

Whew! I'm doing something right.

I've always said I sleep on the left side of the bed.......as I'm laying in it. So if I'm at the foot of the bed, I sleep on the right side. Nope I sleep on the left, at least in my way of thinking.

haha I lay my head at night at the "foot" of my bed. I don't like to sleep with my head against the wall or headboard which I don't have anyway.

In L.A. the house is on a curved street, and I sleep from SE to NW. In Cathedral City, I sleep from east to west, and so I do not sleep aligned with N/S in either place 😞.

Our bed goes N/S but our feet are at the north end. Does that matter?

I do the left side/right side from the position of lying in bed on my back.

If our head is supposed to line up on the North, I'm good. The sun comes in to my bedroom window early in the morning on my left side.

What's the benefits of aligning our body N/S supposed to be? It sure isn't helping me sleep better. ;-)

There are a lot of opinions about sleeping with one's head pointed north, and so there does not seem to be a consensus. I had heard that it was supposed to give you more energy when you woke up, but I've not really tested it. At the last place I lived in San Francisco, I slept with my head pointed north and my feet pointed south, and I do not remember it being any different from other orientations that I had had.

The Times of India suggests that sleeping E/W is best, which is what I do in the desert, but I am at a 45° angle in Los Angeles.

I've always tended to sleep on the side facing the room door.

I've moved my bed a couple times and always feel best with it on one particular wall. It's weird what you become accustomed to and feel OFF when you switch it up.
