closet door dilemma

When we bought our house several years ago, there was one reach-in closet in the master. So we stole the closet of the room next door so we’d have double the closet space. It’s great except we have this wall in between (just in the front, the closet is one long space) and have realized we can’t really utilize the space behind that wall. I’d like to get rid of the wall between the doors.
My dilemma is how many doors? How wide do they need to be? As in how do I shop for them-do I look for sliding doors for the entire length or do I break it down by size of each individual door? The space from
Wall to wall is 11’. Am I looking for 4-33” sliding doors? I believe I’d want 2 sets of double sliding doors. Do they overlap? I have tried googling and it’s not really helped.
Do we need a divider between both sets or can they kind of butt up against each other? The bifold doors are annoying because it eats into our already small bedroom.
Please excuse the messy closet picture-that’s the shelving that we can’t really use because it’s hidden behind that wall!

Electric water heater, yes? I don't see how bypass doors are going to work with this situation. You will need three doors (32" doors) and a cased opening. This opening does not appear to be a typical 2x4 framed opening. You need the depth of a traditional casing in order to mount the track to the header. The track(s) will be a lot wider than bifold tracks because each door slides in its own track. IOW's, you will need three tracks mounted side by side to the header. I have bypass doors on three closets in my house. I so dislike them. I don't love bifold doors either but bypass doors are much, much worse.

Keep playing with drawing til something makes sense. I tried to sketch something out, let's see if I can attach it. Did you want to add a tub, or just a bigger shower? If windows can be added to the left wall, it would really add more possibilities! I made the bigger closet skinny so the window light still comes in. This loses the hall closets so it may need more work. I am not a big fan of the hall between the closets, it was my attempt to keep the window. Either of the closets where the master was could be removed to be a sitting area or a desk area. Obviously I am not a professional. I just like looking at and thinking about floor plans. I am sure others will jump in to improve my sketch by criticizing it lol. I left the toilet and one sink in place. I think the shower could use the same drain and it would not be too bad to extend the pipes to make it bigger, and add the second sink. The entry point is a bit crowded but I was having trouble adding a second sink if I made the bathroom door by the closets.

SO you each have a 7' x 13' closet? Outside a luxury sized bath? And more closets, un needed upstairs? You have a SPACE issue? Honey, I doubt it. You simply need to put OUT of season, upstairs. in season near the bath. Then call a California closet, or a Loews. ( yes.... they can do a nice job ) and together, with an ASSESSMENT of your cloting......sports, dress, folded, hanging, shoes, accessories, scarves, belts bags et ALLLLLLLL, You decide how you want to out fit the space. Thart's the shortest route, because clolthes are personal. If you tend a farm, your closet doesn't look like someone working o n Wall Street. The clothes required are different. If you can't find room for grooming and bath supplies in that bathroom? You need a major purge of who knows what : Maybe you need a make up table under that window. Only you know. Only you know your clothes. Maybe you're Sarah Jessica Parker, and maybe you aren't : ) You must "suggest....you" Lighting is dependent on ceiling height, and needs to be ether recessed or flush mount

I do think some of this has to do with your expectations for closet space, too. I think of Patricia's comment that a narrow aisle isn't enough space to choose your clothes--but I don't spend any time in my closet trying things out or even looking at them carefully. They just get plucked off the rack and taken right back out; there's a mirror and room to change in the bedroom. If you prefer having room in the closet to do that, this is not that closet (nor, really, is a 5' wide closet, IMO). My in-laws have, coincidentally, almost the same size and configuration of space that we do and renovated it 25 years ago, reallocating the space between their 1960s-era master bath and closet. They opted to do a 6' wide walk-in closet with a mirror and changing space and a 5.5' wide bath. (We split ours 4'/7.5'.) The tradeoff was that they could only fit a 30" x 30" shower and had to do a bumpout for the vanity to have room (not an option for our home). They felt those were worthwhile tradeoffs, but we made different decisions for our space. It really comes down to what works best for you.

I think the interior closet design needs changing…I would consider doing custom closet..the area behind the small wall could be shoe storage or storage for out of season items…I dont think sliders are going to be better.

I think the doors are the best you can do. Sliders aren't any better.

Spend the $ on a closet system. It will utilize the awkward space and solve alot of problems.

While it’s messy-we do have an organizer system in there. Rods, shelves, and drawers (Elfa and it was $$$) it’s just hard to reach that center area behind the wall. I was hoping removing it and putting in sliding doors would solve that issue.

sliding doors wont give you much more room. when one side is open, the other side is completely inaccessable without sliding that one the other way.

what you have (the bifolds) give you the most room.

the other option would a sliding type of barn door (but not the barn door look) if you have room to completely slide it to one side

if you want to remove the center fixed portion, find out if you can (you may need support) and completely rework the entire opening

Is this what you were thinking of? I agree sliders have their limitations also. One idea is if you did doors like below would be to try to arrange closet so clothes worn more frequently are in the middle two sections. That way you can just mostly open middle doors instead of sliding back and forth.

The area behind the wall is where I would store our luggage…out of sight but close at hand.
