Paint Oak Cabinets or no? Which countertops?
Comments (17)Hi All, I've taken the above into consideration and I believe I've decided how I want to move forward. I'm going to leave the tile, paint the cabinets, get new countertops, appliances, lighting, and paint. Open questions I have are below, and I've included dimensions and pictures of adjacent spaces as they were requested above. Questions: - Colour of appliances. I like black stainless steel personally - Colour to pain the cabinets, and how to account for the cabinets under the stairs. I can leave them, but ideally I'd paint them if everyone agrees - Should I install a range hood over the current cooktop/wall oven. I'm going to simply replace with range, but ideally I'd leave in the same place - What to do with lighting? I like edison lights, but not sure if they fit I've got a lot of open questions, but I'm not very creative and am hoping to benefit from some good advice. Open to all feedback/criticism. Thanks!...See MoreWhich counter stool do you like best with this unstained cherry?
Comments (11)megs1030, I think you are probably right about the wood finishes competing. I liked the cushion color a lot which is why I'd narrowed it down to that one, but I wasn't super thrilled about the base color. I hear you all on adding color. I think one of the reasons I'm hesitant here is because the configuration of the kitchen is such that there will be a fairly narrow area to pass through between the island and a wall that juts out behind it. Currently this is where the fridge sits and there is literally only 21" right now between the right corner of the island and it, but that should hopefully not be for much longer. Once the fridge is moved there will be 54", but I hope to put in some lockers along that wall to capture the jackets and boots that everyone wears out back, so it could potentially shrink to as narrow as a 36" walkway (that's still tbd though). So I don't want there to feel like there is a lot there, I think I want the stools to seem to disappear when not in use. It could be when the fridge is out of here I won't feel that way, it really closes the area in right now. I'd probably have to see the low back chairs in person to get a feel for if they'd tuck away enough. I doubt there is anywhere in town that would have any. Maybe I should stick with a couple of really inexpensive stools until we're further along....See Morewhat color countertop goes with honey oak cabinets?
Comments (6)We only had a few minutes to chat, but she said she probably could not afford granite. I don't know her budget yet either. I am going to suggest to her this site and also Pinterest to get some ideas. She's not a computer person so I wanted to take photos of ideas and show her. I'm not sure what options she can choose from besides a laminate. Maybe a silestone or something comparable would work for her....See MoreNeed help working around our 80’s honey oak cabinets and black counter
Comments (37)That is not a particularly traditional kitchen. And in my opinion, not necessarily so elegant. It also looks like that kitchen has white cabinetry. There is a ton of contrast in that space you show above, and a lot of ”shine” - on the ceiling alone. The light blue tones of the ceiling may evoke some degree of calmness in the space, though; light/pastel blues on a ceiling can do that, and they can also make the room appear more spacious/ the ceiling appears higher. But the main thing that is saving that space from seeming completely chaotic is the lighting. Notice the lighting in that space. If that space had your fluorescent lighting, it would be a nightmare. Look - there is nothing wrong with your kitchen. Really. Wood for cabinetry is very much en vogue right now - plus is classic. All types of wood are trending, including yours. And the slab front type styling on your cabinetry is also trending. There is also nothing wrong with the finish (shine) on the current granite. It is classic stone, and is not out of date. Would a piece of marble with some shine be considered out of date now? No. These are all personal preferences, at this point - not mandates for what is in style or not. The lighting in your space is the MAIN ISSUE. And if the lighting has not yet been settled, you are not even seeing the space accurately. Your space is really MUCH MORE cohesive and ”calm” than the kitchen in the pic you are showing above. Nothing wrong with your black appliances, either. They worked well with the counters and cabinets. But the stainless is fine, too - and will help to integrate your floor....See Moreeld6161
