discouraging fire ants

So I'm trying to discourage fire ants from invading my HVAC compressor electronics. I can buy a very expensive spray to kill them on those electronics. But I was thinking that I could also treat the area around the compressor to discourage them from mounding near there.

I really don't want to do a whole yard treatment. I just want to treat the area immediately adjacent to the compressor. I routinely use Amdro bait on mounds. Can I just sprinkle that stuff occasionally around the compressor to discourage them? That is, does the bait for killing mounds also work as a general fire ant preventative?
