The photo by itself doesn’t give enough info. can you take a photo that gives a larger overview? also one that is taken at an angle so we can see the slope? this just looks like a chunk of lawn and fence.

Also, think about your goals. Do you want to hide the fence? Is there a view you want to preserve or hide? Do pets or children use this area? Etc

Added some more pictures for reference. Between the hill and fence is maybe 2 feet of flat ground. Looking for ideas on what to do with the awkard hill as its a pain to mow.. but its so close to the neighbors fence not sure what can be done to it…

If it was mine I would turn the slope into a flowering meadow kind lawn that would only have to be mowed once or twice a year.

Keep the two feet of level at the bottom of the hill next to the fence as a mowed path. Mow a perimeter at the top. Mow a path across it if you want. Skip the hard to mow parts. That is your flowering lawn space.

Poison the grass. Cover it with a thick layer of mulch. Come fall it will be ready for sowing seeds selected for the site conditions. You would need to have an interest in learning how to do a meadow landscape though. Long term it can be less mowing and can be done with a weed eater. Zippity zip.

I mow the flowering lawn meadow space once a year in February. This time of year I mostly stand back and let it do its thing.

I like Christopher’s general idea of having a frame of grass and how to set things up now for planting in the fall. I have a hill that I planted to two types of tall perennials, the old fashioned orange daylilies that spread (Hemerocallis fulva) and an aggressive spreader, Centaurea dealbata. I also installed buried edging to discourage grass from growing into the bed. I planted right through the layer of woodchips I had put down after killing the grass. You could keep it simple and just have a tall meadow of perennials. I weed my hill twice a year and every couple years add mulch while the perennials are dormant in winter.

I wanted some taller plants as well, so added a Kousa dogwood and some mid-height shrubs, including a panicled hydrangea; hydrangea Annabelle where the tree would give it shade in the afternoon; some chartreuse folliaged spirea, a few Spiraea ’Ogon’; and several Caryopteris. Mine is an area that isn’t easy to see in winter, but you might consider adding some evergreens if you want winter interest.
