Dendrobium growing outdoors in SF bay area..

One of the Comet types. Its been on the palm for a year now. Just to show it can be done and something to look forward to as it adds more canes and one day might make a real show.

This,is for now.

try a Eureka lemon on a standard rootstock ( not a dwarfing rootstock). I am in Berkeley and mine grew FAST! it is very vigorous, it's evergreen and the lemons are fabulous. I'm using it to block the neighboring apartment building, and it's working! The neighbors planted an avocado and it is even faster-growing, but it is also well on it's way to being 30 or 40 feet tall. they now have dwarf avocados that are only supposed to get to 12 or 15 feet tall but I don't know if they grow as quickly. They have them at East Bay Nursery in Berkeley.

I dont think they are Navels...these are thinned skinned. They are sweet. Tomorrow I'll post pics of them and after cut open.

And the likely reason the plants are sold in small sizes at the local nurseries is because they all have to go in a greenhouse during the winter, and can't be left outside. sort of a catch-22. Tropical trees growing in small containers are a lot more vulnerable to cold because there is no insulation to keep the roots from getting as cold as the outside air. It's not as practical for the nursery to store so many big sized plants in their limited inside space. You are indeed right, that is probably the reason gardeners in sub-cold climates have generally not had success with tropical fruits; young plants are more vulnerable and not able to tolerate the winters.

"Comet" type? It is a hybrid nobile type Dendrobium that needs a "cool" winter to do well.

Does it have a name tag?

No,I got it at a flea market. Wasn't even in bloom. I had it larger with more canes over the years..then almost lost it letting it get too dry on my porch. Last year went with the palm trunk. I also have an Oncidium doing well. It's another said to be too tender for the bay area. It's really grown too. The Oncidium was first to try..but something knocked it off the palm last year. I just replaced it- and tied it down this time. Last time,only had the boots and moss to hold it.

If you go to the Hybrid register and search for Dendrobiums with Comet in the name you will get 11 hits most bred by Yamamoto who bred nobile type Dendrobiums that do not need a severe degree of cooling to bloom in spring.

No idea how many hybrids Yamamoto registered, a guess hundreds.....
