Tricky Kitchen Layout: Remodel Advice

Looking for ideas/advice. Originally we thought about simply updating this kitchen, but now I’m wondering what kind of options we might have for changing the layout. What would you do with this space?

Hard to provide much advice without dimensions. Anything to get the sink out of the corner and eliminate the angled stove as well. I would flank the fridge with pantry cabinets (this would narrow the passage into the dining room slightly...), move the sink to be next to the dishwasher, eliminate the wall oven in lieu of a range centered on that wall with a ducted hood above.

Is there any reason why those angles have to be the way they are (looks like not really)? I think Hallett's suggestions are all good ones. You could add shallow depth pantry cabinets between fridge and dining to not impinge so much on the doorway, although it looks extra wide so perhaps not a concern.

Your home is gorgeous! I spent a year renovating a 1939 petite colonial (1700 sf). In my case, I had to add a kitchen as the old one was tiny had badly renovated in the 1990s. A few workflow tips in your newer post with the kitchen. I'd put the prep sink at the range end of your island, instead of at the dining room entrance end. Think about it -- you chop, then have to carry the food to the range. Please rethink that desk in your kitchen. I've had "work/message centers" as built-ins in previous homes, but here in my new old house, I'm using a piece of furniture -- a drop-front secretary where I can close up the mess when guests arrive, but sit there and work (printer in the bottom). You can put the secretary in any room. Where your desk is located, it's not a drop station for bringing in the mail, schoolbooks, etc. For aesthetics, please try to make the kitchen fit the spirit of the house. White cabinets would likely fit it better than stained wood. Consider having at least a few glass-front upper cabinets. If you turned that desk space into storage, you wouldn't need to line the walls with upper cabinets. It's amazing what you can fit into a "hutch" look that would fit the aesthetics of your home. I had hutches flanking my farmsink in my previous home. One for pantry items, the other for dishes. My current 1939 home new renovation -- hutches -- the one of the left of my paneled fridge is for dishes and the one one the right side is filled with food items stored in canisters and containers. My kitchen is only 12x12 as the dimensions are in keeping with the original room sizes. The dining room is 12x12 and the living room is 12 x 21.

I am not a fan of sectionals so I will just put that out there. I have found that two sofas facing one another take up less square footages and provide as much or more seating in situations where a sectional might be desired. I would place two sofas facing one another and move your TV to either wall that has a door.

uh, I'd keep looking. that fireplace presumably has a chimney that continues up through the roof (and any floors in between) and could be tied into overall structure. changes here are many (tens of) thousands of dollars before you pull out any walls or replace the required flooring... as for pantry, a walk-in requires reworking the whole floorplan. it looks like you have plenty of cabinetry here, including a bank of tall (presumably pantry?) cabinets in the hall facing the kitchen. I'm not sure I'd invest what it would cost to make the pantry enclosed or what it would do to the kitchen layout. it's best to live with a kitchen for a year or two before doing a huge overhaul, as often you find out you like and dislike different things than you might have expected. this looks like a nice layout, but if it isn't scratching your itch, keep looking until you find one with bones you really like.

Hi! My husband and I started out saying we will do a quick “clean up” of our new summer home before moving in. 6 months later and everything is practically gutted! Including the kitchen lol. So this is a super quick and last minute kitchen remodel. Appliances need to stay exactly where they are . I think my main concern is Will the room look too cramped with the island? I need seating for 2 at the island. Should I keep it as it’s shown or put the stools on the fridge side of island? Thanks!

Mostly agree, although I don't mind a corner sink if you have windows like that behind it!

How does the current arrangement work for you? The work spaces look decent, although of course you'll be glad to have base cabinets with drawers in addition to cabinets, and to fill in that desk space with a trash pullout and more. You could put some charger outlets on that bit of counter next to the fridge. But are there things that have bothered you? do you use the wall ovens? etc.

I think we need a floorplan that includes the adjacent dining room. My initial instinct is to blow out that sink wall and build an addition to push that wall back to the same plane as the rear dining room wall, then open up the space between the kitchen and the dining areas. That would not be a cheap date, but it would significantly improve the function in your kitchen and give you a whole lot more storage. Right now that space is really tight, cramped and not particularly fun to be in. Would be worth exploring with a good designer and possibly an architect.

Thanks, all! We are in the early stages of buying the home, so I haven’t had a chance to “live” in the space yet, although I definitely can’t see us enjoying the angled stove. I don’t have all the measurements yet but will definitely share the floor plan when I have it.

It’s interesting because the kitchen is flanked by two different dining spaces, a more traditional dining room and a breakfast nook with the bay window.
