Do you have tinted or Low E? They are not the same

It is important to understand that Low-E coatings are not the same and should not be used in conjunction with a window tint treatment because it might result in slight discoloration. As window tints add alloy materials to the glass, the depth of color will change with the thickness of the glass.

In contrast, a Low-E coating is a thin metallic coat that is applied to the glass and will not have color variations based on the thickness of the glass. However, it may have a minor, often unnoticeable, reflective and slightly green tint.

Low E is required by code in pretty much every jurisdiction in the US today. What glass package was specified and ordered? Realistically you can change out the glass but is will be dam near as expensive as putting in all new windows. And the Low E cannot be stripped off the windows it is not film. It is applied to the glass glass as a sputter coat process and is in the air space side of the glass.

Our HOA replaced our roof and skylight. The original skylight was untinted so had bright natural sun light. The new skylight is argon green which makes my white walls and white/wood minochromatic decor look hospital asylum green. Any recommendation for wall paint or skylight treatment to counter this color?

Hi, yes there is. You can buy window tint that is specifically made for glass that contains low-e coating. Or you can buy window film that can be installed directly onto the glass itself. The window film will reflect light just like regular window tint does, but it also has other features that window tints don't. Window film also acts as an insulator, and it prevents UV light from leaking into the glass, making it a better alternative than window tint. Also, Window film will block the sun from damaging your furniture and floors.

Argon, if you are referring to the gas in the IGU, has nothing to do with the color cast from the glass.

Depending on what type of skylight they used (curb or deck mount), you could swap the skylight for a unit that is clear glass or with a gray tint fairly simply. That would likely be the "easier" modification.

Maybe a professionally installed film on the window?

I have never noticed this with low e windows so I am guessing some kind of window film not low e by itself.

Some Low-E coatings do give a green cast to the light coming through. In my two decades of working on windows, I have also realized that everyone's eyes see colors a bit differently so you could be super sensitive to shades of green. White walls will also make any color that much more noticeable. Replacing with clear glass is expensive and loses energy efficiency, don't do it.

You can have window film professionally installed by an expert who understands what products are best to use on your type of glass. These films will have a warranty from the manufacturer to stand in place of any warranty that the glass company wants to void for applying the film. There are lots of options to choose from but the colors will typically range from "neutral" (shades of gray) or "blue" (think blue sky). Here is a pic with a darker "blue" film applied to the uppers and a lighter film in the same color family on the lower set of windows.

I have Milgard low-e and the greenish cast is not a tint. I have become used to it, but it definitely affects colors. It is what it is. The windows are fantastic for sun protection which important to me than a green cast. I installed shades and when those are in use the green cast is eliminated while still letting light in.

I also detect a bluegreen hue from LoE glass. Anne is correct -- it's not a tint or coating. It's something about how the actual glass is made. It's very subtle, and the energy efficiency is worth it, summer and winter. I'm super color sensitive and I eventually got used to it. It took about a year to stop noticing.

The best thing I did was paint with a soft white that has a subtle peachy pink undertone. (Not yellow, which will turn green in this light.) The paint doesn't actually look pink, it's a soft white that balances out the green.

Question for SOLARIS do you have any info on where i can get the window film that you mentioned? I have 5 new Low E skylights that are projecting the green light.

I agree the horrific yellow-green light that is poured into the interior of my home via the low-e glass is beyond terrible. Wish I had NEVER gone with it. I am looking into window tint as a possible solution, but remain doubtful it will help. Hope I'm wrong.

Finally someone who sees what I see.
I have Velux skylights and in the one long room with a high pitched ceiling, the side of the room where the skylights are is an icky green hue and in the same room on the other side with a big side triangle window the white paint is as it should be. I literally cringe every time I see it especially on overcast days and afternoons when the sun has moved.

My whole house is the same tone of white so changing the paint colour would not only be expensive but would possibly clash with the a joining rooms.

Will grey film counteract the green and should it be put on the inside or the outside?

I'd buy nearly opaque white, cover the skylights, and turn on the electricity. I find the roof lighting horrendous/offensive to my eyes on ALL skylights. But that's me, not you. I used this on a powder room window in white. Works great and dirt cheap

I believe the tint would be put on the inside of the window. As far as success in reducing/eliminating the green/yellow tone, I have yet to figure that out. Plan to have a tint pro out in the next month or so to evaluate and hopefully to find a solution. Will update once I have some answers.

dbhunter, don't be doubtful, there are lots of options that will enhance the look and color of your existing glass.

Katrina, you will be able to tape up some samples to see the color change on your white walls. Film options will come in a few flavors, "neutrals" Gray/green/brown, "blues" and bronzes. I'm confident you will find something you like.

We’re you ever able to find a solution to the problem? I recently got my low e windows installed throughout my whole house. During the day it’s fine. However, at night my windows turn into green mirrors from the inside looking out. It’s awful

Hello Luciana. That sounds wrong. I'd reach out to your installer and/or window company to check to ensure that is correct. As far as our home, we have yet to find a solution. I do believe, that some sort of window film will help and we'll look into that in the spring.

The installer said that’s common for low e windows. I had a film company come out and put different shades of tint samples on the window and it does help to reduce the green hue at night. I’m waiting on the quote to see what the cost will be to apply the tint to the windows. However, I’m hesitant to apply the tint as I’m worried it may damage the new windows

I would imagine that tint will not damage or affect the low-e glass, so you should be OK in that regard. I would check in with the manufacturer of the windows. Still sound odd to me what you are describing.

anyone figure out how to offset the green hue BY adding tint on the inside? I have a set of big milgard windows with suncoatMAX and I do not want GREEN hue in the front of my house. Any help on tint that will counter act this look is great!

New IGUs is your only option.
