Does anyone have experience with a permanent leek bed?
Comments (23)Seems to be some confusion over the term "permanent" bed. As I've used it in the past, it merely means that the bed is dedicated to alliums. Onions, garlic, whatever get grown in the same bed over and over again. The exact opposite of rotation planting. The idea of such permanent beds goes back to the 19th century, when commercial onion breeders discovered they actually get better productivity from using the same beds over and over again. The whole idea of crop rotation, as it turns out, has been greatly overplayed in almost all cases. There are only two reasons to rotate crops: Depletion of nutrients and soil-borne disease. In the average home garden, neither of these problems can be fixed by rotating crops. There just isn't enough room. However, assuming you replace the nutrients (that's what compost and other amendments are all about, people), and in the absence of a heavy infestation of a soil-borne disease, there is no reason not to grow onions, or garlic, or, to put a point on it, leeks, in the same bed over and over again....See MoreElevated raised bed experiment

Comments (7)Yes metal will cool faster than wood and taller beds will cool faster than shorter ones. I assume your beds are close to ground level now but lifting them up even if they are full of soil will let in more of the cold because the sides are now exposed to wind and cold weather. It is the same as leaving plants to winter in a planter as opposed to planting them in the soil. You may be able to get away with it if you line the sides of your beds with thick Styrofoam. It will lessen the heat loss from the sides. If you get snow shovel it up against the more exposed sides. Loose snow is a great insulator because of the trapped air inside it...See MoreExperience/Advice Please on Room and Board Waverly Bunk Bed
Comments (11)Like the other poster, I don't have experience with this particular bed. I have the Jennings bed (queen size) purchased sight unseen last year-wanted something sleek, simple to go with some vintage MCM wood furniture. I also have the Dean sofa (gray) and Andre chairs (indigo) purchased around 2015 after viewing in a store and those pieces are in fantastic shape. Customer service and delivery service are top notch. Just my unsolicited opinion, but I think two twin beds would be more versatile than a bunk set up. It's too difficult to change the bedding on really either bed in that configuration and I'd be fearful of shenanigans that would lead to a fall event....See MoreDonald
