Please show me your recessed can lights in your vaulted ceiling
Comments (25)fyi, the rims can be painted after installation. Charliedawg, our plugs are perfect. With the lakeview, fireplace, tv, open kitchen and arches to DR and foyer, there is really only one natural place for our sofa. I knew we wanted to put a sofa table behind it, so we left room for that and enough room to walk between table and the cedar posts at the kitchen opening. The electrician said there was no rush since the plugs were going into the main level, which is second story, so we were able to wait until house was framed to decide exactly where they were going. DH and I used empty boxes to place where the sofa and measured to make sure there was enough room behind for table. (You can see the two cans in the kitchen we didn't need :( ) Here is a link that might be useful: Great room...See MoreSkip recessed lights, focus on ceilings & under counter lights?
Comments (4)Well, it looks like I'm going to have to consider low voltage then. Direct wire would be more convenient. I will re-read the LED ucl instructional threads now with low voltage in mind. Are there a couple manufacturers you might steer me too that are reasonably priced, have the aluminum casing, 2700 warm light, and reflect well on most counter tops (not intense dotted lines)? The transformer (think that's what it's called) would be placed in the basement, accessed near the kitchen. davidtay, have you ever heard of a low voltage led ucl transformer interfering with another low voltage system in the same room? The Broan make up air damper for the vent hood, as all universal mua dampers, also requires such a system from kitchen to the basement furnace via low voltage signal. I don't want humming and flickering throughout the kitchen. Any thoughts on this? Thank you....See MoreUndercabinet Lighting & Recessed Ceiling Lights
Comments (21)Our kitchen is similiar, not a lot of natural light. We used halogen recessed cans in the ceiling. You'd be shocked at how much light they can throw off, and they are not too concentrated in one spot. Just make sure you have the right kind of reflectors in the can for more general wide lighting. They also do illuminate the ceiling from light that bounces back up. We put halogen pendants over the island, but they are more spot, as they are concrete and only light the area below them. All the halogens are on dimmers, so we can control the amount of light and heat they generate. On dimmers, halogens are very efficient and "green", using less electricity. Under the cabinets, we put in xenon. They stay cooler. However, to be totally honest with you, we never have all the lights on at the same time. The halogens illuminate the kitchen so well I hardly ever use the undercab lights, even during meal preparation. The xenons usually come on when the halogens are off during a dinner party (we have a huge great room kitchen arrangement). They function more as mood lighting than anything else. If I did it over again, I'd probably even omit the undercab lights altogether....See MoreCanned/recessed ceiling LED lights for 20-ft ceiling
Comments (25)Yeah, I could see that spaced out hanging lights might be awkward. There are already canned lights around the upper area *not* over the lower floor area, and as expected, they cast minimal light onto the lower floor area. I think I want some downward lighting for the lower floor area, so I think the original plan to put recessed can lights into the ceiling, 20 feet up, probably makes sense. I'm aware that they need to be fairly bright, possibly narrower beam since they're so high, and four is a bare minimum, six or even eight might be warranted. Battery operated picture light is worth considering, thanks for mentioning that option....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
