Does anyone know this weed and how to kill it?

I live on Long Island, New York and recently a stubborn weed has now taken over my entire lawn from front to back. It looks like wheat and has a very strong stem. I have tried every weed killing product sold in Home Depot and nothing affects it. It literally grows to over a foot long in just a matter of days. Here are a few photos.

Unfortunately for you it’s a grass and any herbicide which will kill it will also kill any other grass in your lawn,

A gardener threw this down when we asked him to over-seed. I've read about gardeners throwing down cheap seeds and even weeds that look like grass. It looks like I will have to rip up the entire lawn front and back and start with new soil and grass seed.

I have the same problem Bloomingamaryllis... Something started growing in my lasagne bed that I didn't recognize as either weed or plant, so I thought I'd let it go. It's growing very fast though, so I'm of the opinion that it's too good to be true, so out it goes. On the other hand... I've been waiting for my lone surviving (of 3) Salvia Greggi to bloom. But the plant that's next to that marker is blooming now with the tiniest of white daisy flowers. So I guess none of the Greggi survived. So what is this? A misshipment from the nursery? I'm pretty sure it's not German chamomile. I have what think is that growing elsewhere and it's different foliage. This is very, very fine foliage. The flowers themselves are about a 1/4" across. I'm wondering if it might be some type of aster, since it just started blooming now? Alice

Great..Now that we know what they are, how do you rid of these horrible things..I saw this problem comming when my neighbors decided to let their yard be over run.. They gave up and let them win, until I stepped up to the plate to keep their yard up, and these things keep coming back.... They inched closer and closer to my manicured flower beds, and now I have them.. What works so I can get a head start next year? How do you kill weeds that have root feeders? Maybe Roundup? I hate chemicals..But if this the only way, I will use the stuff, even if it shortens my life..Arg Thanks so much...

Directions for mixing and application will always be printed on the pesticide label. That is a Federal law and following the label instructions precisely is also a Federal law.

Lamium purpureum , aka purple deadnettle. It is a cool season annual weed and relatively easy to pull out. Try and get it out before those flowers go to seed or it will be back in the fall. Any broadleaf weed herbicide will kill it as well. It is also quite edible if you fancy that.

Possibly Lolium multiflorum, annual or Italian ryegrass.

There are some grass selective herbicides that can be used in relative safety on an established lawn to control grass-like weeds - Fusilade, Poast, etc. Also a pre-emergent containing sulfometuron may be helpful.

By "relative safety" I mean that it is unlikely to have a seriously damaging effect on the established lawn.

Dear Gardengal48. Fusilade has two products. The Fusilade II and the DX. Can you recommend one over the other? I will test it in a patch of grass to see if it kills the rest of the healthy grass. THANK YOU!

Fusilade II is intended for use on lawns and other grassy areas. DX is intended for use with other crops. But they both contain the same active ingredient and in the same concentration.
