Need Help with our Front Elevation
Comments (9)You asked for opinions so... It doesn't "work" for me. Not at all. It's far too busy and there seems to be rational plan to how the different cladding materials are used on different parts of the structure. They're just slapped on willy-nilly. But then, I also don't like your inspiration picture. To me, having stone go part way up the second floor level but not all the way to the roof makes it look like somebody goofed and didn't order enough stone and then, rather than get more, decided to just "do something different" the rest of the way up. Ugh. And, if your builder doesn't flash very properly between the bottom of the Hardi sections and the stone/brick below it, you're likely to get water intrusion. In my opinion - and I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but you did ask for opinions - you've chosen a bad "inspiration" and made it worse. James Hardie's website has a nice little booklet called "The value of design" that I urge you to read. Comments (20)Decorate for the house you actually have, not the fantasy house that you don’t have. Notice I didn’t say “Design”. Design for this was a year ago, and didn’t involve anything Tudor. Design is Form. The bones. Your Form is set, and the basic Form is not Tudor. It does have a lot of nice Modern simplicity going for it. Simplicity that would be best served by a single cladding material, however that might be achieved. And a redo of the copper roof to achieve a more modern and simple direction. It’s ornateness is a jarring element against the rather more severeness of the body. Severity in this case is a good style direction. Bringing on late in the game decoration that isn’t at all part of the design form will look even more unnatural and overblown. Like Mario Buatta set loose in Phillip Johnson’s Glass House. Comments (9)I like your brick better than the painted ones, so if you['re selling soon keep in mind that the money you spend may actually turn off some buyers rather than enhance the value of your home. Appearance aside, some buyers believe that painted brick requires upkeep, and you'll be unlikely to be able to have the conversation to convince them otherwise. Attractive landscaping would improve your property's appearance. Some of the existing shrubs would be a good background after pruning, so don't start by pulling things out. I can't tell what your shrubs are from your pictures but some evergreen shrubs like yews can be easily shortened, e.g. the shrubs in front of your windows. And most deciduous shrubs can also be pruned to avoid unattractive bare lower branches....See MoreHelp with porch railing color on front elevation of yellow brick house
Comments (22)Trying to maintain the simple lines of the existing structure. Remove gable and use same roof material everywhere. New roof extends to existing ridge. Columns smaller. Remove additions around garage door. I'd ask for a drawing showing no shutters under the porch, and correctly sized shutters shown too. https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/...See Moretc9876
