Headline in today's NYT: A newly released U.S. report on unidentified flying objects says 143 sightings since 2004 remain unexplained. It does not rule out alien activity.

If there are indeed aliens just hanging out and watching, I really can't blame them for taking a 'Wait and see' attitude.

Hold on here!! If one bothers to read the actual report, they make it very clear that they are not saying that "aliens" are behind these sightings........only that there was no plausible explanation that they know of as to what they were or what caused them.

And the NYT reporting on a widely published military intelligence report interpreted as supposedly "sinking to the level of the National Enquirer" is taking things a bit far, dontcha think?? It was also reported and published in all the major new sources, including the WSJ, the Washington Post, CNN, USA Today, etc.

btw, these are no longer referred to as UFO's but as UAP's - unidentified aerial phenomena.

Get a grip, people!! We can't begin to think that we - the human race - know everything there is to know about our universe and what's out there. Maybe not little green men but who the heck knows?!?!

You counted canescens twice... Canescens is the bottom picture, orange at the top is flammeum (syn speciosum), and middle is maybe austrinum. They all look so similar in pictures: I have to seem them in person to tell them apart, and that's with a guide book. Like there are three orange ones: flammeum, cumberlandense, and calendulaceum. And the pinkish white ones are even harder. Delightfully fragrant tho.

If I were a gamblin' woman, I would bet on the weed: Sonchus oleraceus, annual cow thistle.It has a strong tap root that makes digging out very difficult. And they will provide you with plants for years to come because they are heavy-duty self-seeders. You don't want them in your flowerbeds. They can grow to 3-4ft tall.

This is very strange. First of all, it's got three seed leaves instead of two. Then it looks like it's flowering or something. But when I was editing this photo, I realized it might be another seedling lifted into the air (which is what it is--it's hard to tell in the photo) because of the seed shell on it. Has anyone seen anything like this?

WHY is it the default attitude that aliens would always be out to destroy us??? Too much old science fiction tales, methinks... Humans do seem to view aliens askance at first glance, don't we? Hmmmm....

Well what could the Pentagon say? other than what they're saying which amounts to : These objects are real, they are being visually seen, they are being recorded on radar, they are being photographed/video recorded, and they are flying around under their own control where they can easily out maneuver our best aircraft, and our gobstruck pilots see them quite often.

So in summary, we don't know what they are or where they come from. They might as well admit that they've known about them since at least the 1940's (and probably have tons of pilot video footage since then) and that people who have reported seeing them over the decades should feel some sense of validation.

This story is an example of the NYT sinking to the level of the National Enquirer. Mind you, I think the Gray Lady has been slumming it for a while now, but pushing this nonsense aliens fantasy is so naked as to be laughable.

Exactly!. Unexplained means unexplained, not "it's whatever you want to say it is".

What I saw on the news about this is that they pose a security risk to the U.S. because they are primarily seen around military site, especially naval ones. The defense department mainly believes that they are earthly, but they have not been able to identify from which country they are coming, but they are claiming that they are not American. I think they consider them to be spying on our military installations.
