If you look at furniture made by Shakers, it has 5 piece for the doors and slab for the drawers. They liked simplicity and used 5 piece for the doors where it was useful to counter the dimensional changes of wood but not in drawer fronts which were small enough to make from a single board. Since they didn't have modern drawer glides, their furniture usually doesn't have the deep drawers that we have today. That was the look we wanted so we went for slab on the shorter drawers and 5-piece shaker doors and drawers higher than 8". Since our lowers are mainly drawers, that also makes for easier cleaning when something drips from the counter. I got shaker drawers. After my panicked request here, I also consulted TPTB (The Powers That Be, as I refer to the designer who helps us with our remodel; DH calls her "the high priced talent"). She said definitely shaker. By that time I'd seen all the pics posted here and realized I love all 3 options and can't make a bad decision no matter which way I go, so I just went with what she said. I'm totally shocked that the cabinet order is DONE and I'm not nervous. After 48 or so kitchen layouts including major changes like originally doing a minor remodel, then a major, then swapping DR and kitchen, then going BACK to major redo of kitchen in existing space, I sort of feared we'd never actually commit and do the thing. It still seems very unreal at this point, so maybe that is why I'm not nervous. The cabs are shaker with the wide rails and stiles (more contemporary) in a medium/dark cherry. I will have soapstone counters, I hope, and will keep my existing oak floors. I'm keeping some appliances and getting some new ones. The biggest change will be that I'm removing the bay at my kitchen table and doing a larger squared off bay so that there is room to actually move around the table when a diner is seated, plus I will get seating for 3 at the island. We're supposed to start the heavy structural Aug 18 (bump out window), demo kitchen 2nd week of Sept around the same time cabinets are scheduled to arrive. I am expected to be without a real kitchen for 3-4 weeks and, with luck, the beloved GC and his crew will leave by Halloween, still beloved. let's hope that plan works!!! I also have slab top drawers on my shaker style cabinets. We considered all slab but we were in the same boat as you...all lower drawers for the most part and didn't want it to look disjointed with slab on the bottom, shaker stiles/rails on the top. We're all done now but here's a pic from "during" showing the top slab drawers on my pots/pans drawers and my garbage pull-out.

Nidnay, Oops, I should not get on the computer after 8 PM. I had known at the time what you were talking about and then when I glanced back over the conversations this evening I saw the 17 1/4 " and because that is close to the height of what I calculated for the top dish drawer panel on mine, I just thought that is what it was and I had somehow missed it earlier. I actually later did ask you the size of your dish drawer just to compare with what I calculated with that silly Fisher Paykel worksheet. If you can, sometime can you tell me the dimension of that tall dish drawer which is likely the same size as the top one would be for me. So we are clear now. Sorry, I just had gone back over my calculations late this afternoon and that is what was on my mind. I really do appreciate the Houzz forum. It is such a help for people like me who often bite off more than they can chew when it comes to home improvements. But when you live in a 75 year old house there is always something to do.
