Well I can't tell what condition the soil is in without seeing it, but if there is some root rot then the soil may have broken down and compacted so that it now holds too much water and not enough air. If this is the case, the best thing to do would be to remove all of the old soil from the roots, trim any dead ones, and repot in new porous soil. The plant may take a while to recover, but it will be much healthier in the long run. Poor soils are the number one source of problems for container plants. I'll provide a link to a very good soil recipe for succulents (and all houseplants for that matter). It performs much better and lasts much longer than peat based soils. If nothing else, consider adding a good 50% perlite or pine bark to your potting soil next time you repot. I have turned rotting rootballs into thick masses of white roots just by switching to a gritty, free-draining soil mix. Here is a link that might be useful: Succulent soil mix

laughable - I'm not Chicago Bob, but we had considered something like that at one point when it looked like I might not be able to have my 3rd (top) drawer under my induction cooktop at a usable height...we would have had the front represent as the two drawers, but part of the front would have been covering an area of the cooktop clearance, then the drawer in a drawer would have been just below that...putting the drawer within a drawer would have yielded me the storage area that I needed, even if it was a bit less convenient. If you have a choice though, I would be less likely to do the drawer in a drawer. As it is, my top drawer front for my cooktop cabinet is 6" high (lining up with the rest of the top drawers in the kitchen) and will have a drawer depth of about 2 1/2"...enough for me to put flatter utensils (or some people would put lids) in that area.

Looks like and old warrior ,it has a few battle scars .I would pot it into some thing not much bigger than the one its in ,say 1" bigger .Probably when the weather is warmer may be in spring would be a good time.

Like I said, the MG stuff would not be my first choice :) And I certainly would avoid the regular MG potting soil.....it doesn't even drain well enough for more moisture loving houseplants!! I wouldn't dream of using it for succs. I use a proprietary blend sold by a local grower and wholesaler of cacti and succulents. It is closer to the gritty mix, being one part bark to one part coarse perlite or pumice and one part cherrystone poultry grit (available at feed stores). Drains fast and well. Bonsai Jack is a good choice as well. ETA: perlite and pumice are really interchangeable. One or the other - no neeed to use both.
