Refinish ash veneer & move cross country or replace?

We have ash veneer furniture from 1980 that I still love but the tops are porous and water stained, the shelves are scratched, and the color is uneven depending on light exposure. Refinishing and moving will be expensive. Buying new will be expensive because I don’t have to buy top of the line, but neither do I want something that will start to fall apart in 10 years. It’s what you see plus 2 bookshelves also 33 inches wide, 8 pieces plus bed. For those who know furniture, what do you think? Sand the tops ourselves and ship? What product would you use? With veneer, is it worthwhile to have the furniture professionally refinished? Donate to charity and start fresh? All opinions are welcome.
