Need help with tile flooring in white/coastal style kitchen!!
Comments (8)If sunlight will dwell on the tile for a portion of the day, the darker one will collect and retain heat better--more useful for passive solar--free heat! Even in summer the dark color will take in the heat and tame the air heatup and will release the heat at night when the air is cooler--to even out the day/night disparity in summer rooms. (Plus you should shade those south-facing windows in summer--honeycomb shades? landscaping? overhang? etc.) And in summer you can put a seasonal rug over the dark tile to cut down on heat retention if the floor seems overly warm in places where sunlight touches it....See MoreDurable Siding/Cladding Advice for Mid-Atlantic Coastal Home on Budget
Comments (23)I'm in the NE. We found one installer through the Everlast website (a larger firm that specializes in siding and roofing); however, as with most projects (at least at our house), it's not straightforward and we needed the gutters taken down (and re-installed) and fascia replaced, etc. and this big firm was not willing to do those details. So I found a local, experienced GC who has done similar work (it installs similar to vinyl) who was willing to do it (as well as the other work needed) and so far, so good. He did contact and work with the Everlast rep. We initiated about a year ago and our job just came up in his list about 2 weeks ago to start. So in that time, he said he's heard of more interest in Everlast. I don't know what's considered "budget" or not; I do know we were having trouble finding painters willing to deal with all the issues our old siding was having (and our last paint job was $$$ IMHO), and this will alleviate our having to do a painting rodeo every 8 years (again, just what our house was needing). Will the woodpeckers still peck holes in it? dunno. I do know it's not going to blister, peel, warp or crack. Knock on wood. Everlast does have a board and batten profile; the GC has commented he likes that it is not bendy at all (like vinyl) and each plank/board interlocks and there is no flex, cannot pull it away from the wall at all. So not sure if that's helpful for winds, etc....See MoreHELP! Custom Home Floor Plan + Elevation Advice on Coastal House
Comments (39)Thanks for the rearrangement but unfortunately that doesn’t work. I already mentioned in the initial post to ignore the kitchen layout; I’m good with that and that’s already changed a bit. I don’t want a dining space, it’s just a waste for me. I actually took it out of the initial plan. The screen porch needs to be at the back of the house due to the size/shape of the side lot - putting it there gives me that awkward extra space behind the porch. I also had windows that opened into the screened porch so that I could prep drinks/snacks there and have that as a pass through, which I loved. It’s more important to me that the windows in the kitchen look into the side yard; like I said the view out back isn’t an awesome view it doesn’t need to be a focal point. I also had a small cabinet section by the fridge/pantry for a coffee station. I also lost a ton of storage and counter space And having the fridge as the focal point when you enter the room is just not flattering - I liked it better as glass sliders on that wall. I don’t want windows on the other wall of Bedroom 2 because that will be my office and I want flexibility on whether I center the desk in the room or do something along that wall - plus the windows would cause too much glare in the background for zoom meetings. The other bedroom could probably use another window though. I prefer the master closet at the back of the bathroom - I’ve had it both ways and I don’t like if a guest needs to use my bathroom they have to go through my closet nor do I want a hallway and then more doors that enter into the closets. I do agree about extending the house (as I mentioned in the original post) so my question about that was how to estimate the cost of that....See MoreHelp please--What color/s would you choose for our coastal home?
Comments (22)Thank you for your ideas, Kendrah and Maureen. Kendrah, the current colors ARE really nice together—but they’re not “right” for us. Hopefully, the ones we end up choosing will be as graceful together. Maureen, I love the pictures you posted and the look of hinged shutters that can actually close, but we don’t have enough wall space on our porch to have that kind on the four front porch windows (or around our door) because of the sconces and doorbell. We took down the shutters that were on the ground floor because we thought they were too skimpy (and, unfortunately, can’t be any larger). We could have larger shutters made for our three upstairs windows (which would include the one over the garage)—but not for the front porch windows....See MoreEco Method Interiors
