Advice on Kitchen Plan - Reno + Bump out
Comments (6)Thanks much for all the comments - sorry the excel layout leaves a lot to be desired to understand the flow to the rest of the house and the exterior - which is pretty important. I'll try to lay something out - but basically, the backdoor comes in off the driveway which is at say elevation 0, then there is a first step down into the first part of back yard, about where the steps down are from the EIK that takes you down to -4...to a lower bluestone patio that goes into a walkout basement right below the butler pantry. Then, the backyard slopes down yet again another 4 get to -8 total to the right of the end of the house. I will draw up. What do you think right min. size is for a 4-top round EIK? In my "excel" lingo, the black rectangles are doorways and the orange are windows, so the thought was to create a floor to ceiling glassed in EIK, which is the best view of the backyard. (Top of plan is north, so is going to be south facing which is a concern). The door out of the EIK is the secondary access to the backyard - and the grill. Good point about the location of the refrigerator - thanks again for all comments......See MoreHelp! Love my kitchen but it's stuck in the 80"s. Running out of time!
Comments (23)Thanks for all the thoughts. The electrician and I decided on LED cans around the perimeter and finish the light box with more cans or uplighting strip. (The ceiling can't be raised because of duct work). I don't need more storage or counter space so starting over doesn't appeal to me. I really have loved the kitchen so it works for me, but agree that the next person could start from scratch. For this old lady, I love the forgiving tile as the house sits on a lake and the brown granite that enhanced the oak-trimmed mountain rustic home when gray and black was all that was available. The cabinets were high end CRYSTAL cabinets with real wood, so I'm okay with keeping them - probably better quality than many newer. It's the laminate doors and drawers with oak trim and oak wooden handles that I'd like to replace (not repaint). I have a local cabinet maker coming to bid a simple, flat panel door and drawer in light wood or taupe/gray paint. Appliance garages are history! Maybe glass doors or wood shelving instead of the uppers above the garages? Never gave much thought about the bar sink, but agree the mirror and faucet gives it a vanity feel. The coffee station that is housed in the appliance garage, could be relocated there. And I'll be shopping for a paint color for a softer, modern look. Any other thoughts?...See MoreTemporary window options? Reno underway, lead times jumped... help!
Comments (7)Not really.... We put plywood up from the exterior, added insulation, plywood up on the interior, and then stapled thick plastic over the opening on the interior side. We added a hanging garage natural gas furnace and vented through the future range vent. It cost us approximately $900/month to keep the construction side of the house at 55 / finished side of the house at 70 through the winter. We were constantly worried about frozen pipes. I'm so sorry you're facing the same thing. I wish I had a better solution to suggest to you. Frustrating long wait time and terrible winter aside, take a look at this beauty that was just installed on Thursday:...See MoreNeed help placing Dishwasher, Range and Sink in kitchen reno.
Comments (10)@mccarroll16 There are 6 of us in the house, and our house is always the holiday house, so we are always cooking huge meals for the holidays. I've had to cook stuff out on my grill, inlaws bring their camping stove, etc. In a normal week we will cook 5 dinners, and usually have 3-4 large pots/skillets going and they never actually fit because they are too crowded. The Dacor I want is 48" with 6 burners, LOTS of space for each burner. I have a 35cm "Bigga" from Solidteknics that does not play well with other pans. I am pretty sure that on the Dacor is JUST might fit in it's own place. Our next choice is a Fisher & Paykel that has 8 burners. Also a realtor friend of ours suggested that having a 48" in a big house like ours, with a large kitchen would help the resell value. He told us this after we had pretty much decided to go with a 48". As for the drawers vs pull outs. We have a good mix of the two now and I don't like casserole dishes and things like that in a drawer. Mixing bowls and things, eh... With kids, they can easily dump stuff in a drawer, but a shelf requires them to do a little more work. I've heard mixed opinions on the resell value of a home that only has one or the other. Before I moved from Ohio my buddy and I built a pull out spice cabinet. It 6 or 8" wide and had three rows and you could get about 10 in each row. He bought like 60 matching containers and some fancy label stuff. The tops were all labeled. The next level down was "free for all" as he called it. He put his overflow or things that he didn't want in the top in there. The bottom was the "oil pit" where he has his cooking oils and things. I can't remember what he did on the bottom to help absorb and manage the mess that always accompanies them. On the OTHER side of his stove we had the utinsel drawer. The top had 3 "buckets" with the most commonly used stuff. There were 3 more on the bottom as well, and he put the less used ones and ones that were too tall in there. I'm pretty sure that one was 8", I know the "buckets" were 6" across. I am thinking that if I have 10-16" on each side that I could do something similar, but a little larger. Then in the corner it could just be a shelf that we use for the appliances we use MAYBE a dozen times a year....See Morebeesneeds
