Is it weird to miter the edge on island, but not the rest?
Comments (11)hi guys, thanks for your thoughts. Yes, i meant if I miter the island slab,(bee-they don't stack it, they make the edges appear thicker, SHARHER has it on her white macabus island)and then i dont miter the perimeter counters that have the same material would it look funny? I really only wantd the thicker edge on the island, but I think I like that look when the island is marble or quartzite, and the perimeters are a different material.I think I might just keep it all eased edge. I think I'm scared of the seam that comes with mitering it.However I do love the look of the thicker slab on the island....See MoreRift Oak Kitchen Reveal
Comments (42)Thanks again for the comments. gooster: Glad to hear you had good experience with Modernaire. I am probably overly harsh on them. Their service was probably as good as anyone else's. It was more that the range hood itself was just challenging. ppbenn: The island top is White Princess quartzite. The design of dark cabinets and light counter was really inspired by firsthouse_mp and annkathryn. Thank you to them! The WP is fairly consistent in color and not too busy. Has just the right amount of green and grey without being too splotchy. There are several threads on White Princess. I love it! The island size is 92" x 42". We wanted it a little longer to fit 4 comfortably but when we laid it all out we thought it was better to have more room in the aisle by the refrig. We have 46" there and 42" on the sink aisle and range aisle. @kaysd - the painting is oil on hemp. It is from a Vietnamese artist Vu Thang. http://vuthang.vxartgallery.com/Gallery/...See MoreWill island be taller with miter edge?
Comments (6)When we are planning a thicker top for an island, we allow for it by lowering the cabinets so the height of the countertops match. This is done if the is nothing in the island that will prohibit this such as a dishwasher. It doesn't work well lifting things from one surface, pivot around to set it down, and bump your heavy item on the other top that is 1" higher. Kind of like going down stairs at night that are uneven. Many ranges will adjust higher or have optional levelers for the higher counters....See MoreQuartz Fabrication Fiasco
Comments (5)"They told me ”mitered edges are very stong and no extra support is needed.” They are liars and here is visual proof; a peek into your future: The only thing supporting this span is the front mitered edge. It has sagged from gravity and has pulled the mitered waterfall apart. A mitered edge has no chance against gravity. Engineered stone is not structural; it is veneer. Steel is structural. The cup wheel marks on the edge in your last picture are particularly egregious and indicative of a clueless fabricator/installer. They were so aggressive, they've torn out material leaving the little holes. The only cure is more abrasion, however, unless they do the entire edge, that's going to exaccerbate the dip that is inevitably there. Place a straightedge against the edge and you'll see the dip. Your first three pictures indicate adhesive voids, air bubbles, and contamination. If a larger edge profile doesn't help, and I doubt it will, maybe some tinted super glue may get it to acceptability, but I'm not optimistic. Your seam is wide, ugly, and looks like it was cut with a chainsaw. Color match is good though. Set the straightedge over it please and see if it rocks or dips. A 4' level placed in an "X" fashion would be informative too. Dig up the LG fabrication and installation manual and show them the required support. Now they're not arguing with you, they're arguing with LG....See MoreJenn A
