St. Elisabeth is a fantastic rose in my garden. Perfect health,covered in flowers-all of which open perfectly-and thornless to boot. All of this-and keep in mind that my garden conditions are very harsh,plants must rely on rainfall after their first year,and summers here are horribly hot and dry..Two of my St E of H's are growing in part shade, and are great; the one in full sun is not,but the soil there is terribly hard, dry clay and needs amending badly.

This rose is very bushy; supposedly it can be grown as a climber,which I am thinking of trying,since one of my flourishing St E of H's is, sadly, in the "wrong" place and I want to move it. I have a path that needs to be shaded by a pergola -I'm sick of getting hit by the hot sun every time I go to my garden-and if I could get St E to act as a climber,it might be a good choice, since it has large leaves and flowers. But it is not a lanky type of plant,so I think it'd need training to get it to climb.

The only criticism that I could possibly make about this superb rose is that I wish it would start blooming a bit earlier in rose season,but perhaps if I move one into full sun it would start opening earlier...

I just planted one in mostly shade. It's small but holding its own. Rather disappointed with the size of roses Heirloom Nursery sent this year. One of the five died back in March, and I still haven't received my credit. It's nearly July! Definitely not the same quality and customer service that Heirloom has provided for the past decades. I wonder if it's been sold or is under new management. I don't think I will be purchasing from them again, which is sad as most of my 100 plus roses came from Heirloom.

I like this rose too but part sun wasn't warm enough for me to keep overwintering St. Elizabeth of Hungary in zone 5. I've replanted mine in full sun just to help it with an extra virtual zone of winter survival. I kept one alive for a few years in part sun but it wasn't hardy enough to last there.

Thanks for your comments! It *does* look like a beautiful rose! I don't have a problem with cold winters, but finding a spot big enough for her in full sun may be a challenge...

Thanks for the kind wishes for winter survival - we'll see how this year goes! Carol if I had extra snow to shovel on roses I wouldn't have as many winter protection problems as I do. Other zone 5 spots with better snow cover overwinter SO many more roses than I can. We get Texas weather, Canada weather, Texas weather, Canada weather, etc. most seasons and the snow isn't reliable to stay on the roses most years (just the streets and sidewalks sadly). My cross country skis from WI are gathering dust because by the time the weekend hits and I could go out the snow is usually poor quality even when it sticks around indefinitely.

BTW like much of the western US we're stuck on the "Texas weather" pattern for all of June so far with 90s and 100s uncharacteristic for this month. Please send us all cool thoughts and rain from those of you in cooler climates - particularly the drought stricken west.

Cynthia - I get it. :) That makes it way more difficult. Some people here will build a thick styrofoam cage around their rose beds and stuff bags of leaves in them.

I can't believe that we're going to get hot weather in June!!!! We're getting up to 90F next week!!! That has never happened before. I'm wishing all of us cooler weather. :)

It's awful here in Italy, too. I hate summer. It's only bearable if you sit inside the house all the time,and so, SO BORING-every day the same weather. And there's still more than two months to go...

Bart - I always thought that Italy would be wonderful in the summer. I guess not. Sigh. Maybe you should grow some indoor plants. That's what I did for our long winters...I grow streptocarpus plants. They like to be fussed over. :)

Yes, we all need cooler summer temperatures. Prayers are coming from me...that's for sure! :)

Gosh, the last thing I need is more plants, lol! I'm already going crazy trying to get rid of my pot ghetto out on the terrace,but it seems to be growing, since I'm digging up roses that aren't doing well and/or are in the "wrong" spot and potting them up.

I don't lack for indoor activities, most certainly-I'm always so far behind on my many projects, but I get bored having to stay indoors most of the time. I love working out at my land; it's so beautiful, but when it's this hot you just can't do much of anything,and it's down-right dangerous to force it. Every day the weather seems the same (well, yesterday was pretty nice, since there was a strongish, steady wind, but days like that have become very, very rare here),and summers here last SO long. It wasn't even that bad this year, since we had some rain up until the first week of June, but now I'm already sick of heat and drought, longing and hoping for September when at least the days will be shorter. Maybe if one could just stay at the beach all summer it would be less tedious, since you could go in the water to cool off, but you'd still have to deal with the crowds, noise and caos...No, no, no, I hate summer ,and am 100% pro rain dances,cloud seeding. etc. Global Warming has totally ruined the climate in Italy.

I wonder sometimes if the earth/ parts of the earth, run in cycles, sometimes decades long cycles. We recently went to a beautiful museum an hour or so away from here. The setting was gorgeous, but presently quite dry. They informed us that when the area was originally settled by Europeans , it was in a “60 year wet cycle” and then it ended and has been in a dry cycle since. That seems to correlate with other things I’ve heard and read about climate cycles in various parts of the earth. Last year we had a beautiful wet monsoon and it appears we may have another wet monsoon this year as well. Perhaps, just perhaps, our dry cycle is ending and we’re embarking on another wet cycle? One can always hope! Not just for Southern Arizona, but for all the drought stricken areas of the world. Praying for rain and reasonable summer temps for all of those trying to garden in dry areas!

Update: My St. Elisabeth of Hungary is finally settled in and ready to start taking off, I think! First bloom of spring. It is truly a lovely rose. And very healthy. Still too young to say much about size of bush and form. But I'm happy I got her!

I moved mine in January -- long story short, I wanted to try an apple tree so put that where Elisabeth was, and now Elisabeth is elsewhere. Also, last year was hard on her, as a ground squirrel kept digging all around the gopher wire cage! Though she didn't bloom all summer, she didn't die from the terrible treatment. Hopefully this year will be great. Definitely sends out long canes that could be trained to climb.
