Backsplash Help
Comments (19)I love Weidiii's backsplash - or even if you did just all one darker color like a charcoal or nondescript sand color (is it beige or grey? ;) I've been googling all night tonight - trying to come up with my own kitchen solutions - but all night I've been thinking about your dilemma since I read it earlier. I was thinking that I agree that it's too much white (just my opinion but I know others really like the white on white look) and that you need some contrast. This might sound nuts but what about some sort of stone slab backsplash like soapstone or a greyish granite backsplash - something charcoaly? Honed granite? I'm considering one a colored ceramic subway tile that probably wouldn't look too great w/ marble (it's a peachy-beige sort of color w/ a gloss) but the company I'll get it from - if indeed I go that route and IF I can afford it - has a LOT of very inspiring materials from tile to slab. If you go to the link that I'll post below, be sure to check out different kinds of 2x6 or 3x6 tile but also check out their catolog. I just browsed through it and here's what I thought might look good with white marble: p. 238 decorative stone: Lagos Azul (subway style). p. 196 brick mosaic noir. P. 190 honed slate mosaics - charcoal. And lastly, the tile floor (!) in the picture on p. 336 is half white marble and half this very nice solid sand color (more grey than beige). You could ask the company what that is and if they could have it either bigger or smaller (size-wise) for backsplash. Another thought was that you could just not go up too far with a continuation of marble slab and then paint the rest? Or even some glass subway tile might look appropriate if you pick the right color. I was thinking that if you don't do more marble - or solid white subway tile - that you might want to avoid something too swirly cause then it will compete with the marble. But if you do either marble subway tile or white subway tile, I'd do white instead of marble. It will be too much of a good thing me thinks! Just my 2 cents - or is it 200 cents?? :) Good luck! http://www.walkerzanger.com/catalog/browse.php...See MorePainted Wood Floors- Thoughts?
Comments (47)boxerpups- thanks as always for the pics! Some of those patterns are just beautiful! circus- I think I already was a milk paint girl! I have an armoire that my DH and I bought unfinished when we were first married that we stained first, then painted with milk paint and distressed. That stuff holds up SO well. BTW I love the "tipsy rowhouse". One of my neighbors should call hers that... grlwprls- we must be kindred spirits! I am looking forward to seeing your reno VERY much. Thanks Casey- I'd love to see the other pics too, once you get them. The mushroom is more in my color palette. Jane- I did see your other post, sorry I hadn't responded yet- computer thing (above). Thanks so much for the links! I am starting to really love Slipper Satin. I was putting all of my Farrow colors on the floor, and so many of them were turning greenish, but the Slipper Satin just glowed! I am afraid of going too light though, since you would dirt more. Maybe I will take my yellow lab and color match her!! I LOVE the second pic of the teal kitchen with the checkerboard floor. I have had that in my idea file for so long- years and years. I love love love that color. I think I will do the checkerboard in the dining room if I paint the floor- tonal though rather than so graphic. I also love the limed wood, and have for quite awhile, but now that it is everywhere, I think I am going to stick to more easily changeable pieces for that. I have an old wing chair with some carved wood that I plan to resurrect with a lime wash, some linen and some nailheads. The biggest obstacle I am coming up against is what color. I do not want to do too light of a color- no white or cream. I need to download all of my reno so far pics and my key pieces pics. I am running out of battery power and have to charge in the laundry room- not many working outlets....See MoreSomething new, something different
Comments (13)Thanks for your posts. While you were posting I was looking into cork flooring. I currently have tile and while I like the look, it is hard on my feet after a few hours. Lavastone will probably be out of reach. The cabinets are already spendy and I will probably have to settle for something less expensive on the countertops. Cork flooring worries me in a humid environment. We have no heat, no AC, just fans and tradewinds. It's certainly not as humid as the east coast and the south. I read that it naturally repels insects. And oh, it sounds so comfy on my feet. There is another product which is a combination of cork and recycled rubber. I also liked the Marmoleum with its great array of colors. The salt spray (we're about a quarter mile from the ocean) shouldn't be a problem if you wipe the cabinets down now and then. It's the same with our painted garage door, a spray now and then to keep debris off keeps it looking good. Inside the house, the upkeep will be even less. I'm leaning towards darker lower cabinets (either chocolate, graphite gray or iridescent blue, and lighter uppers I like sea glass or or biscuit. I saw a kitchen with the iridescent blue and loved it....but will I in a few years? I have an actual paint chip brochure and the colors on the website are a little off on my computer. Seaglass is the palest aqua...really just like seaglass. You can also order any Viking appliance in any of the colors. The only appliance I need to buy is a range hood so I might go with Viking. Still struggling with countertops. Kind of like a solid white or stainless....See MoreColor and Design Commitment Issues
Comments (26)sayde - Well, I live in a 1952 ranch that is slightly under 1000 feet. When we moved in, we played up the cottage angle, painting the outside butter yellow with white trim with big window boxes and casual country with leanings to Tuscan and British Colonial on the inside. We are currently residing the outside (with new windows/doors - my slider went in to the DR this week and I am loving it). The siding is vinyl and looks like cedar shakes in a medium cedar tone - paired with thick white trim and crown. So, the 'cottage' is now leaning coastal on the outside and the inside is a blank slate. The only decision point that has been made in the kitchen is the backsplash window - and our plans to tear down the wall separating kitchen from LR/entrance seem pretty solid. (I say seem because I'm really learning I have the capacity to veer off on almost everything). As for style, I suppose that's part of the problem, too. I lean traditional but not fussy. However, my taste has somewhat evolved and I do like some of the modern, zen, clean lines paired with chunky aestetics that have come out in the last decade. We are considering IKEA Lidingo cabinetry but are 3500 miles from a store so it's sight unseen and will be quoting other options. (Can I just say that your counters are one of my favorite ever, though likely out of our pricerange and probably not even available in Alaska? The movement in them is just so beautiful) marcolo - Yep, you are giving me more of the stuff palimpsest is giving me that I need to hear. While I do think a lot of the white subways showcase the granites beautifully, there are plenty of kitchens where people could well be missing out on the opportunity to do something special and chicken out. Yes, yes, yes - every decision takes you towards something (something you choose and therefore want, hopefully) and further away from something else. And, what's worse, to not make a decision IS to make a decision and often, leaves one in a sea of crappy, limp, indistinct, lifeless vagueness that is not so much an affirmation of anything but an avoidance of everything. I KNOW I don't want that. And I fear I am at risk for it, thus the post. Meanwhile, while I like the blue/white, I'm not sure I want to marry it. lol (I may seem hopeless, but don't give up on me yet!! You can throw a sink at me when I frustrate you, though...) Lisa0527 - Well, you sound like you are being brave. And, if the link is any indication, so is your friend. Holy smokes, I cannot imagine commiting to colored cabinetry like that. And yes, there ARE a ton of amazing colors out there! PS - DH sounds wonderful. dianalo - My mom just put in corian and she LOVES it. I was recently visiting her and I have to say, I was rubbing my hands across hers, too. Often. I read about your GC/contract problems and you have my total sympathy. It sounds like a freaking nightmare. I can't wait to see your reveal someday, complete with these counters. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find more display kitchens. (And what IS it about samples looking nothing like the real deal? The same happens to me with paint chips...We need to figure out a way to fix that! lol) I also read on another thread today that you bought your counters at IKEA, didn't I? How the heck did you get rain cloud there? Or are you talking about another coordinating counter? What did you think about the IKEA counters? rococogurl - Yes, I do think the problem is compounded by the tearing out of the wall and needing to make sure the kitchen will coordinate with the LR/entrance (which joins to the TV room/den) and the DR. I also just realize that my taste changes over time - but a kitchen is probably a one time thing for me. All of that ups the ante and risks me crucializing the decisions. I did take the Sweeny test, and managed to get my partner to answer 3-4 questions before he tiptoed from the room. I sent a few more questions his way through the doorway, which he mumbled answers to before fading out into the tv. lol A review of that is a good idea, as is continuing to pour over pictures for inspiration, and eventually, direction. I really appreciate the post - and advice to cut myself some slack. I really do want to make this fun, especially the "exploring options" part. I am just a person that relishes options - commitment, not so much. That's just how it is. I think I'm wired that way. Pisces, if it matters. lol sophie123 - See, that's just brave. And a lovely, vibrant blue! I do think it makes sense to at least narrow down a few countertops/sample boards soon here before I get to into anything. Luckily, I have some time to play with this, as we are working on the exterior and water heater/furnace for the energy audit and nothing can really happen with the kitchen anyway. I haven't completely ruled out a consultant or even a KD, either. It would really be about finding someone who I really trusted and admired their eye/taste, though. Being able to tease this stuff out and get some feedback is so incredibly valuable. No one in my real life is even remotely TKO and I benefit from being able to process some of this stuff out of my own head, where I can go in circles. Thanks for being companions and making the process more informed and less lonely....See MoreKevin Doherty
