I want to grow citrus. It's mostly just the idea of being able to grow citrus - and I mean big trees out in the yard. Not smaller plants in containers that I have to fuss over. I want citrus trees as a feature of the landscape. And according to research I had done, I realized I was in a marginal climate zone where that might not be entirely impossible, if I got some very rare unusual varieties. Right now it's sort of like a collection where I try to get as many rare different varieties as might be able to grow outside here, while still trying to pick the ones that won't have a flavor too terrible. Growing subtropical things helps make me feel that the temperatures are warmer than they actually are - like I'm striving/fighting against nature. (I'm not much of a fan of native area plant gardens, as you might have surmised)

Probably and survive 9 out of 10 years if properly root pruned. For insurance I always bury the smaller pots (I have a few and one northern italian fig from a friend in ground) in my empty vegetable bed during winter and pop a garbage pail over it. One big one (Greek Fig) in a pot is too big too bury so I throw a frost cloth over it. Momma fig is still alive at my friends family house in Greece and a 3 story clone exists at his Brooklyn House.

I've tasted something that I had identified as a probable Morton Citrange, which was growing in someone's yard in Vancouver, WA. When you cut one open, it misleadingly looks like a delicious orange. I and the homeowner think they taste horrible and inedible, but the homeowner says he has two relatives that say they kind of like the flavor. Interestingly he also has what is apparently a special variety of pure Poncirus that I can stand to eat a little of. Doesn't have any of the horrible putrid "I need to spit this out right now" flavor that the (presumed) citrange has.

In your climate it might just make more sense to grow a dwarf cherry. Eugenias are usually better for people in warmer climates where real cherries are very difficult to grow. If you're curious, I've tasted Surinam cherry before (supposed to be the best eugenia). Interestingly the flavor greatly varies on different trees. It had a spicy bell pepper flavor, tasting more like a plum, a small nuance of cherry flavor, and it was kind of resinous tasting (a bit like a green unripe mango) if not completely ripe. Some of them tasted more like blackberries. They were good and tasty to eat, but I would say regular plums and cherries taste a little better.
