you're going to get a lot of carpet hate here. if you must do wall-to-wall, I honestly think the one that you think is "too dark" is the best one.

I would suggest a different style of carpet-- like a modern version of berber. see below. it's hard to describe, but the texture looks kind of waffly, but not too waffly. I've had it, and it's SO easy to vacuum. don't choose speckles or anything plush, that's very dated.

as far as color goes -- do you love the granite fireplace? personally, I would not try to match your flooring to it, and plan on having it refaced one day. you have a beautiful home, but that fireplace is dragging it down. it would look so amazing in brick or stone.

but honestly? no to carpet. if you're open to other ideas, a hardwood floor would look fantastic in here. it's not too much wood. there are tons of great home designs with wood floors and ceilings.

Thanks for the comments! I will consider them but I have a couple of reasons for preferring carpet. This house is at 6000' elevation and the jagged little volcanic pebbles that we call "Soil" find their way onto floors here. My neighbor has beautiful wood floors and they get scratched up by the dirt that sticks to our shoes. Also, in the winter, dirt is spread on the icy roads and that dirt gets into our garages and eventually onto our floors.

My previous house, in Silicon Valley had beautiful oak floors from 1955 and I loved them but I like the quiet and soft comfort of the carpet here. I'm 70 years old so if carpet looks dated maybe I am finally "Acting my age". (A lot of people have waited a long time for that.)

Why do you like the darker carpet? Is there any math or color theory behind that or is it more popular these days? I do like the concept of a darker floor than ceiling and the ceiling is fairly dark. With darker floors it would look more like an ice cream sandwich. :-)

I understand. nothing beats the soft, cozy, quiet feeling of carpet everywhere.

this is tough. choosing carpet for a small room is easy, but this is an enormous space. it's a lot of look.

I don't exactly hate the light grey you chose for your mockup. I just prefer how much more dramatic the dark color looks. a light color makes the room slightly washed out and a little bland, there just doesn't seem to be enough contrast. maybe try splitting the difference -- a shade in between? no matter what you pick, be sure it has a slightly warm undertone.

also a caution about digital mockups-- it's a helpful tool, but with rendering color online, it's hard to get sense of how it's truly going to look in there. based on your enormous windows, I have a feeling a dark color won't feel too dark once daylight is bouncing off of it (if if feels too dark at night, add a few more lamps).

note: there are house "pros" here and I'm not one of them. I'm a graphic designer and have strong opinions on what works and doesn't work color wise, but there are interior designers here more qualified to direct you, who will also know the names of good carpet styles, brands, etc.

Thank you, ILoveMod. I appreciate your comments. It is a large room and If I use low plush carpet, as you recommended, I could put a large rug in the middle to break it up and ad interest.

I photoshopped a tweener gray carpet on the kitchen side of the room. The hue of the gray is very similar to the hue of the pine but saturation is low and it is darker, How do you like it?

If find that gray works really well with wood tones. I like your last sample the best.

I prefer the lighter gray, and you said that you think you would like that best. Go with your gut.

I have a suggestion for a rug which wiil be laid wall to wall. Called Stanton Anywhere, it is so perfect for your home. I have suggested it to clients and everyone is so glad they went in this direction. The one caveat is it cannot be seamed, but it comes off the bolt at 13.2'.

If this measurement would work for the room, it's worth taking a look at it.

I like the silver tones. If you were asking my opinion for a paint color with the wood, I would say a gray, but one with green undertones. B.M. Silver Song, for instance.

Doug Traub, I really like your most recent mockup! dark enough to add interesting contrast, and warm enough but not too close to brown.

I like an option between the two grays. If you go too dark, evertything shows up on it. You also have a lot of other dark elements in the space, and at night it will appear even darker. Maybe you can find one just slightly lighter than the dark option - the same shade as your elephant!

Doug, just to say, over my years I find myself acting different: like an older person. Funny isn't it? Not a popular comment - but with ceilings, very light walls, is the current carpeting in between? and does it blend well with upholstery. I'd like to add- about the view - that reducing items around the room could help 'see' it a bit more.

In other words, to me it's a house that could do without anything above tv height. Call it pushy - except the item you placed on an already full wall [of a few big windows], Or try several on that wall [like over the fp has it].

Thanks for all of the comments. I need carpet that can be "Seamed" because the carpet will be be 60' x 20' at its longest and widest points.

That is a good suggestion to remove clutter from the fireplace wall get people to enjoy the window views more.

I photo shopped that carpet with gray walls and I really like it. First I tried a gray with a slight Amber hue to match the pine and then I tried it with a slight green hue. The saturation level was so low that I couldn't tell the difference. This photo has the slight amber tint.

The two carpets look a little different but I think you can tell the difference between the white and gray walls.

I think the gray walls look more coordinated. With that goal in mind, I will stick to a gray with the same hue as the carpet and the pine.
