Anybody ever grow petunias or Calibrachoa UP?
Comments (14)Thanks, Dowlinggram. I'm sure you didn't intend to offend. I know after forum'ing for a long time that when asking for anecdotes, opinions will also be forthcoming. Don't know why that particular comment gave me such a rash of rubbed-wrong-way-itis, or why I got snippy about it. Should have followed the proper procedure, close window, refrain from comment until I get over it. Shear, that cracked me up, thanks! I know this is a weird idea, but was also thinking it's not so different from staking Delphiniums, Dahlias, Gladiolus. The more I think about it, the more it seems strange that there's almost a rule about NOT staking petunias when so many other plants would also be laying on the ground without intervention. Such a pretty thing, so hard to see as a sprawler on the ground unless it's a patch of several plants. (Speaking from the standpoint of the little, multi-pack plants.) In a hanging basket, the stems break often where they contact the rim of the pot, and can get heavy enough to split at the juncture with the main stem. I haven't dabbled with the Cals much, most just look like little, faded petunias to me....See MoreSlugs stripping my petunia leaves
Comments (6)Look up "slug bread recipe." I buy tiny clear plastic containers from Walmart for 18 cents (look on rack that has "dishes" to put pots in) to put the mixture in so I can just toss them the next day. I have done it once and caught a bunch of the nasty things. I am doing it again tomorrow night. I HATE slugs! I did not have much luck with Sluggo, and this is cheaper, anyway. :)...See MoreMy Largest Faux Bois Ever...
Comments (39)Congratulations on the commission! This might be a complete faux-paus on my part, but every time I see the term "faux bois" I think of Martha Stewart. She did a good bit on the technique a few years ago on her television program (before her legal troubles). That is actually how I became aware of hypertufa and faux bois. One of her shows was on Little and Lewis and featured the two of them making cast hosta leaves. It might be worthwhile to contact her people to talk about a joint effort involving publication of a book on faux bois. A thought anyway. I enjoy your contributions to the forum and would be very happy to own a book authored by you. Thank you for all of the sharing that you do. You are certainly a generous soul! spiderwoman...See MoreBoy, Do I Love The Color of this Rose!
Comments (16)Waah! OK, but first, I think this is a really pretty rose. Neat, neat color combo! Now back to Waaah. York Rose calls this "sulfur yellow." To me, sulfur yellow has more green (blue) and less red in it than most of the yellows in this rose. The "lemon yellow crystal" sulfur picture in the Wikipedia entry is what I think of as "sulfur yellow." I think I formed my sense of what sulfur yellow is from seeing sulfur deposits in volcanic beds. But apparently it's not what other people think of as sulfur yellow. How do we know which yellow is meant by different terms for yellow? (Butter, lemon, sulfur, etc.) Is there any predictability? How to people using mere words communicate these concepts? I notice similar problems with different reds... I guess it doesn't come up much with greens and blues when we are talking about rose blossoms. Please note I'm not complaining about York's usage, just questioning how we are to know or at least guess what is meant by different "standard" terms... Here is a link that might be useful: Sulfur on Wikipedia...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
