Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Kitchen layout idea!

Hello! This is my first time uzing houzz. We are hoping to do a kitchen renovation. we do not have official blue print yet so i just drew out a rough layout. Currently just brainstorming some possible ideas but would love people’s input! we would like to knock down the wall between the dining and living room (yellow highlighted) to make the home more open concept. But currently we don’t like how our kitchen is a u shape, so possibly knock down the kitchen wall and coat closet (blue highlighted). The idea is then to make kitchen L shaped with island. However i feel like it would look weird to walk straight into the kitchen… what do you guys think?

Would love some ideas on what we could do for our kitchen!

If you add measurements to your drawing, then you'll improve your chances of getting good advice. If you knock down the wall and add an island, do you still plan to have a dining space in the house (other than the island)?

Sorry about the spam post from Kitchen & Bath Shop, too bad they didn't read your post and offer any real advice. But at least they clarified kitchen islands come in different sizes... There are some amazing people on this board who offer really helpful advice, so please don't judge the board based on your initial reply.

Yes, dimensions would be helpful. Also, where are things currently located in the kitchen - sink, counters, oven(s), cooktop, fridge. How many are there of you, how many might be cooking. Also, is this on a slab, or do you have a basement- which would make it easier to modify plumbing, if needed.

The yellow wall knocked down sounds good. Not as certain about the blue wall - where would the new coat closet go? Would also depend on kitchen (and living room) dimensions.

@Muriel Thompson We actually have two more bedrooms and a bathroom in our basement, so it's a good size for us now because we cook a lot, and it will work for a family in the future. Here's the floor plan updated with the cabinets! @biondanonima (Zone 7a Hudson Valley) Thanks so much!! It is so good to know what works and what doesn't work for you. We're definitely planning on putting floating shelves above the dishwasher and also on the other side of the window. I agree with you that corner is kind of awkward as is... since there's a 12 inch upper cabinet there, I guess I could either take it out completely and run the open shelves all the way into the corner? Or else I like the idea of a corner cabinet, that we could run the shelves right up to. The space next to the stove is also a puzzle, I moved the 12 inch cabinet back and forth a few times! Ikea doesn't make 6 inch cabinets unfortunately. I put the 12 inch cabinet on the other side, because I was worried it would feel cramped to only have 24 inches between the stove and the fridge. It could go on the other side though! Or we could potentially build in a 6 inch lower somehow. I'll think about it, thanks for the insight!

I will just comment on the funtionality of a "work station" sink including the grid. I find mine to be highly functional. I love the "grid" which sits on top of the sink for the most part. I think everyone has items that need to be drained in some way including produce that is washed. I also use it for certain items that generate crumbs since they fall into the sink and saves me from having to sponge the counter as frequently. And it enables me to have a larger sink (36") than I could otherwise have since it functions as a utilitarian extension of my counter so I can use it to place bags when unloading from the store etc. The other accessories are fairly standard as I have a cutting board that is a standard thick wood cutting board that sits across the sink. It is no different than any other cutting board. I have a relatively small kitchen and so having the extra "counter" space is great and also helps keep counters cleaner as the prep is done right over the sink. I also have a relatively small little hanging thing with small holes which I use for sponges and other damp items. I don't have one of the massive trough work station sinks because that would be overkill for my lifestyle. I have a *normal* single bowl 36" sink which has a functional rim around it which enables me to use the sink as an extension of my counter for various needs.

If you really want help here post a to scale plan nothing in the space except where the windows and doorways are . Where the doorways lead and all meaurements clearly marked and also the sizes of your appliances since I never design a kitchen until the client has chosen appliances and better yet those appliances are already in the garage waiting. IMo lower tha dividinwall to 36" and put in a nice set of drwer cabinets there but I nned the whole plan to scale and the easy way is to use graph paper.

I would ask about your housekeeping style. In my house, I would hate to have the kitchen open to the entry because I frequently have dishes in the sink, kids projects drying on the countertops, etc. We're also in a cold climate and would have a hard time without a coat closet, but only you know if that would be an issue for you.

Consider leaving the coat closet, but removing the rest of the wall.
