White subway tile backsplash. What color grout? Black? White?
Comments (27)I have the Subway Ceramics Avalon / Minas with a medium gray grout. And a Shaw's white sink, if anyone is considering that, by the way. (My contractor could have ordered it directly, but at his request, I went through a tile store, and by the time everyone had put their sugar onto it, it was OBSCENELY expensive.) I'm not an installation expert, but at least with the Subway Ceramics, the installers use little plastic spacers between the tiles (I think some others have their own spacers?) when they put them up, they don't do it freehand, so how much grout you get is a function of 1) the limits set by the curvature of the tile and 2) what size spacers they use. So you might be willing to go a little darker with a smaller grout line, or with a handmade tile that refuses to go close together, you might want to stay light. The traditional color is close to concrete. But most modern people don't seem to like that, so do what pleases you!...See MoreMarble backsplash too much??
Comments (6)Thanks Swentastic! Yes the tile was a LOT of work. I think marble adds a great timeless organic look. So far, the grout is fine. I have sealed it with some grout sealer. The marble tile is polished so it wouldn't need much more care, but I used the same sealer on the tile as well. I debated whether I should go with a gray/off white grout for a long while. In the end I took the risk. Lets hope it stays looking good. My tile guy really worked to minimize the grout lines. In most cases, the tiles are stacked right next to each other with minimal grout between them. Hopefully that minimizes the amount of water/grease/stains that penetrate the grout over time. Good luck! Share pictures when you are done....See MoreBacksplash? No backsplash? What kind of backsplash?
Comments (25)didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )...See Morehow much of this wall would you tile for backsplash
Comments (22)No, Beth, what I said was that I wouldn't tile above just one window when there's two windows in close proximity. I would treat them equally. In that scenario the charcoal tile would be everywhere and it could make it appear cave-like. That means charcoal tile on the stove wall, the entire wall around the main window, the smaller window, around the door, the nook, and the side wall up to the ceiling. Since snarky is not tiling the main window, I don't see the need of tiling around the small window. It would look better to continue the paint color that's around the main window around the small window. That's IMO!! You have yours, which I am not rudely criticizing. If you're going to tile the side wall near the nook, snarky, take it to the ceiling. Don't just float it on to the side wall at shelf level....See Moregmg
