No Shar, that was not me. I don't do suckers. I always start new plants from seeds, the reason being is that I like to sample new varieties or the same ones that I have with a fresh clean start. Some varieties do better with spring planting than fall. I have seen Raybo from the SWC fame to do his tomatoes from suckers , especially the varieties that only he has access. Of course, he is very experienced and very successful with his tomatoes. Last time I saw him rooting Purple Haze. He got this cross probably from one of his friends, and is not available for us, if we want it to purchase. If I had something like that, I would root the suckers and save seeds too for future purposes. I am sure that it works and it is easy for those that want to try. Does it work only with suckers and will branches work too? I ask because I have a branch in water for 3 or 4 weeks now, it looks very green and healthy - but no roots at all. My basil roots fine under the same condition. And what water you use? My rain water has a Ph a bit below 5, very acidic. I usually add a little NaOH to bring it up to 6.0. I also add a little liquid fertilizer. On top of that I have an air stone in the container. I wonder what water is best to use for rooting?

I put my 6" to 12" suckers in water vessels for about a month... and keep them in the shade. Bear in mind I live in a comparatively hot, arid climate, relative to most places in the USA... so dessication is an obvious threat to any plant that lacks an extensive root system. My suckers exhibit profuse rooting after about a month, and then I pot them in loose soil. Cool weather and cloudy skies (such as our "gray May" and "June gloom") promote the survival of these delicate upstarts. By the time our August heat arrives, my tomato plants will need extensive rooting systems in their 10 gallon pots, and even then I have to shade the plants on hot days. Potted plants like those in my backyard simply cannot hydrate fast enough to keep up with the loss of sustaining moisture, lost through transpiration, in desert-like weather.

Royals - you are correct. If I would be repotting - I would remove the outer row or 2 of the old droopy leaves. The leaves under your fingers with the pale tired leafstalks are prime candidates. At that point you can see where your sucker is attached to the stem - and you can slice it off - I use Xacto knife. You do not want to dig into the main stem, or cut a sucker too short - so the slice should be parallel to the stem. After that - you treat it as Royals suggested - take a small plastic cup - like solo cup - or fruit cup with punched hole in a bottom, fill with soil, pin your sucker to it - I use floral pins - bobby pins or paper clips work too - so it will stay up - and bag it - in 2 weeks it will have roots of its own. And you will have 2 identical pink AVs.
